I finished the Cable Twist Socks! It was smooth sailing without any incidents. But you'll have to wait until Saturday for the photos...
I imediately casted on for another new project (this one is also a Christmas present). Do you recognize the pattern?

Olen jo kauan ihastellut näitä maailman hienoimpia puikkokoteloita. Minun Salainen Neulova Ystäväni omistaa aikamoisen sukkapuikkokokoelman. Niinpä päätin tehdä itse maarraskuun yllätyksen: sukkapuikkokotelon. Otin mallia noista hienoista, ja tulihan tästäkin yllättävän onnistunut!

For a long time I have been eyeing these fantastic needlecases, I think they are the most beautiful I have seen. My Secret (Finnish) Knitting Friend has quite a collection of dpns. So I decided to make her a needlecase inspired on these designs. It came out surprisingly well!



Täytyy myöntää että melkein tekisi mieleni pitää se itse. Ehkä joudun tekemään tänään näitä lisää, itselleni!

I have to admit that I would like to keep it. I might have to make some for myself - TODAY!



Neulepuolellakin oli tarkoitus tehdä (joulu)lahjoja: puikoilla on Cable Twist-sukat. Malli on Hello Yarn-sivuilta, mainio ohje. Ne eivät ohjeen kuvassa näytä juuri miltään, koska niiden sisältä puuttuu jalka! Kiinnitinkin niihin ensimmäisen kerran huomiota Grumperinan sukat nähtyäni. Tein sukista liian pienet ensimmäisellä yrityksella ja jouduin purkamaan kärjen. Mutta jostain syystä toisellakin kerralla niistä tuli lahjottavalle liian pienet, mutta täydelliset minun jalkaani. Joudun siis pitämään ne itse ja keksimään jonkun muun lahjan... :-D

I have also been knitting gifts: these are Cable Twist Socks. It is an excellent free pattern by Hello Yarn. I never paid any attention to this pattern until I saw Grumperina's socks as in the photos (in the pattern pages) the socks are lacking the feet inside! I really like the pattern, but was surprsed with the little amount of stitches when doing the toe shaping. The socks came out way too short for the giftee. I ripped and tried again. Somehow it still is too short! But as they fit MY feet perfectly, well I decided not to fight the destiny and just keep them myself. Now I just have to come up with some another present...

Hurry hurry hurry

Nyt vinottaa ja pahasti. On sunnuntai, aurinko paistaa ja lämpötila ulkona on melkein 20 astetta. Ja minä olen töissä... eli nyt vain pikainen postaus.

No, onneksi viikolla on ollut ilonaiheita! Mariannelta tuli paketti, josta löytyi muunmuassa nämä sukkalangat ja puikot:

Luckily enough I have a few nice things to show you! I got my package from Germany with some sock yarn and new needles:



Trekking Pro Natura villa-bambusekoitelankaa todella tyylikkäissä ruskean sävyissä ja ihanat ruusupuiset VÄLIkoon puikot. En tiedä uskallanko käyttää näitä ollenkaan, ne ovat niin kauniit.

Trekking Pro Natura wool-bamboo-mix in really stylish brown tones, and beauuuuutiful rosewood dpns in 2,25mm size. I am not sure if I am able to use these needles, they are so perfect and fragile.

Tilasin myos Opalin Hundertwasser-inspiroitunutta lankaa. (Siis oli pakko. Jos Suomessa tehtäisiin Alvar Aallon kunniaksi värjättyä sukkalankaa, niin ostaisin sitten sitäkin. Vaikka olisi Novitan!) Lanka on kerässä aika pelottavan näköistä... mutta nuo pitkittäin neulotut sukat näyttävät hienoilta. Löysin niihin ohjeenkin, ihan englanniksi. (klikkaa "see english pages" ja sitten "bits and bytes")

Valmiita sukkiakin olisi, kunhan vaan löytyisi aikaa päätellä lankoja ja ottaa kuvia. Ensi viikolla!

I also got some Opal Hundertwasser inspired yarn. It looks kind of scary in the ball, but I think the sideway knitted socks are relly cool. I already found a pattern for them in english. (click "see english pages" and then "bits and bytes" )

I have some FOs but no time to weave in the ends or craft the toes or take pictures... hopefully next week! Bye!

When Bad Yarn Turns into Decent Things

Nyt takki olisi tässä vaiheessa. Löytyisikö vapaaehtoisia kokoonkursijoita ja erityisesti vetoketjunkiinnittäjiä?!

The Phildar Blouson for my son is in this state right now. Any volunteers to do the rest.... especially to attatch the zipper?!!! Please....?



Isoveljeä löytyi kaapista alunperin 800 grammaa, takkiin meni noin 550 grammaa - mitäs nyt tehtäisiin?

I originally had 800g of this yarn. I used about 550 g for the jacket and I wanted to do something with the rest - so....

Logcabin Socks



pattern: Log Cabin Socks by Anne Woodbury in Handknit Holidays
yarn: Novita Isoveli, colour 270, 180g
needles: 4,5mm aluminium dpns

Kommentit: Nämä sukat saivat alkunsa siitä, että halusin päästä eroon kaikesta Isoveli-langan jämistä mikä takista jäi jäljelle. Mutta yllättäen sukista tulikin ihan näppärät, ja luultavasti Isoveli kestää käytössä 100% villalankaa paremmin. 4,5mm:n puikoilla neuletiheys osui aika nappiin ja sukat valmistuivat mielettömän nopeasti! Ohjeessa oli jotain häikkää kantalapun kohdalla, valokuva ja selitys eivät osuneet yhteen. En jaksanut etsiä mitään errata-infoa, eli sävelsin omasta päästä (jatkoin 2o-2n ribbiä kantapään kavennuksiin asti.)

comments: My main inspiration to do these socks was to get rid of the two balls of this yarn I had left. But to my surprise, they came out quite nice! Naturally lacking the merino softness of Rowan Cork, the gauge was right on spot with 4,5mm needles and as the yarn has 25% polyamid content, they will probably be quite long-lasting... There was something strange in the pattern in the heel flap part - the photo and the pattern did not match. I was too lazy to look up the errata, so I just made up that part (did the 2-2 ribbing until the heel turn). This was a quick and fun knit.



Eilen aloitin jostain syystä paritkin uudet sukat lapsille, vaikka Jaywalkeritkin ovat vielä kesken. Seeprasukat pojalle ja punaraidallisista tulee tytölle jouluiset polvisukat. (Jaywalkerin jalkaosassa se värisähinä sitten kuitenkin iski - plääh).

Yesterday evening I felt a sudden and strange urge to cast on for new pairs of socks - I started these Zebra socks for my son and the red stripy knee highs for my daughter (They seem quite christmasy, don't they? Or is it just me?). I still haven't finished the Jaywalker pair number II....

Latvian Socks and Knitterly Genes

pattern: Latvian Socks by Nancy Bush in Folk Socks (Interweave Press)
yarn: Vuorelma Satakieli 100% wool, colour 560, exactly 100g
needles: addi inox 2mm

kommentit: ensimmäisen Nancy Bushin sukat, joissa käytin ohjeen mukaista lankaa! Nancyllä taitaa olla vähän tiukempi käsiala (tai isompi jalka), koska jouduin tekemään paritkin ylimääräiset kavennukset jotta sukasta ei tulisi aivan liian suuri. Ja Nancyn ohje " sukkaan menee melkein koko vyyhti lankaa, jos teet suuremman koon jätä yksi mallikerta varresta pois..." kannattaa ottaa kirjaimellisesti. Minä tietysti varauduin tekemään näin, varmuuden vuoksi, mutta sekosin laskuissani ja tein kuitenkin ne 10 mallikertaa. :-D Ensimmäisen sukan valmistuttua punnitsin sen, ja sukka sekä jäljellä oleva lanka painoivat kukin 52 grammaa. Siinä sitten jännättiin. Onneksi lanka riitti juuri ja juuri - yli sitä jäi alle metri (alla kuvassa)! Satakieli on ihanaa lankaa, ja siinä on lukemattomia värejä - mutta..... vähän siitä jäi sellainen "ollaanko vaan kavereita" -olo.

comments: these where the first Nancy Bush socks I knitted with the yarn recommended in the pattern! Either Nancy is a tighter knitter or has a bigger foot than I - I had to make a couple of extra decreases as the sock was way too loose for me. And you really should take it seriously when Nancy says " these socks took almost every inch of the yarn called for". She really means it. I did a smallish/medium size (european 38) and even so wanted to omit one pattern repeat to make sure not to run out of yarn.... (but I got distracted and made all the ten repeats anyway :-D). After finishing the first sock I weighted it - both the sock and the remaining yarn weighted the same 52 g. So it was a risky business, but luckily eneugh I did not run out of yarn - there was a generous amount of less than a meter left when I finished the second sock (see photo below)! Satakieli is a lovely yarn and has a lot of colours - but for some mysterious reason I have this "let's just be friends" -feeling about this yarn...



Vahingossa sorruin tuossa viime viikolla tilaamaan lisää sukkalankoja täältä. Oli pakko - sieltä saa välikoon ruusupuisia sukkapuikkoja - IIKS!. Nyt tuli kiire tuhlata edellisen tilauksen langat! Aloitin toiset Jaywalkerit Opalin käsinvärjätystä harmaasävyisesta langasta (väri 18). Tämä lanka on i-h-a-n-a-a. Jaywalkerit ovat myös erittäin mukava malli neuloa (vaikka sukka onkin vähän turhan tiukka). Plussaa on se, että värit eivät lätäköidy tai sähise. (Voisiko joku kertoa oikeat termit, kiitos!?)

Last week I ordered some more sock yarn from here. I had to - they had 2,25 mm rosewood dpns - SQUEAL! I realized I had not used almost any of the yarn I bought there a couple of months agos, so I started my second pair of Jaywalkers using Opal Handpainted (colour 18). This yarn is l-o-v-e-l-y. I really like to knit this pattern, even though I have some issues with the fit. But there's no pooling or flashing in sight - so far!

Mason-Dixon Knitting - ihanaihanaihana. Ostin tämän inspiraation enkä niinkään ohjeiden takia! Suosittelen.
Hardwear - Jewelry from a Toolbox - Olin varsin utelias tämän opuksen suhteen - koruja rautakaupan materiaaleista. Valitettavasti kirja on vähän turhan simppeli. Muutama varteenotettava idea kuitenkin löytyy.
Kaksi Phildar uutuutta: Pitchoun automne-hiver 2006-2007 ja Tendances hiver 2006-2007.Taattua laatua kuten tapana on. Kuvissa muutamia suosikkeja:

Mason-Dixon Knitting - loveitloveitloveit. I did not buy this book so much for its patterns as for the inspiration and -oh-my- does it deliver!
Hardwear - Jewelry from a Toolbox - I was really curious about this one. Unfortunately I found the book way too simplistic and basic. Some usable ideas though.
Two Phildar magazines: Pitchoun automne-hiver 2006-2007 and Tendances hiver 2006-2007 . Many nice pattens, as usual. Here are some of my favourites of the two:



Mutta kaikki nämä uutuudet jäävät kevyesti sen uutisen varjoon, että olen löytänyt uuden sukulaisen! Puisia sukkablokkaajia ja portugalilaista lankaa koskevien e-mailien suhatessa edestakaisen selvisi yllättäen että Tikrulla ja minulla on yhteinen isoisoäiti. Eli Tikrun mummo ja minun mummoni olivat sisaruksia. Ja tämä mummo oli meidän perheessä se kaikkein taitavin käsityöihminen. Aivan vertaansa vailla. Eli sieltäpäin ne neulegeenit tulevat!

But the greatest and most surprising of all novelties since my last post is that I have found a new relative - a fellow blogger! Discovered by chance while exchanging e-mails about wooden sockblockers and portuguese yarn. Tikru and I share the same great-grandmother! (The knitter, spinner and crocheter extraordinaire in my family was my grandmother from my father's side. That's where the knitterly gene comes from.)
