comments: Lovely pattern! A perfect fit and comfy, warm socks. The colour is quite energetic, too. What else can you ask for?

pattern: Wendy's generic toe up sock pattern (starting with 60 sts., then increasing until 80 sts.) Fair Isle pattern from Laila's Socks by Nancy Bush's Folk Knitting in Estonia
yarn: Wollmeise Dornröschen (100g) and Veilchen (20g).
needles: 2,35mm AERO dpns



comments: The Fair Isle action part occurred to me when I noticed that the yarn started to pool quite badly when I reached 64 stitches. Luckily I had the same yarn in other almost solid colourway (Veilchen - violet) and the book with the Laila's socks pattern. This was quite nice a solution, even if I say so myself.

kommentit: Tämä kirjoneule-efekti syntyi paniikkitilanteesta: kun olin aloittanut pohjelevennykset, alkoi lanka lätäköityä. Tarkemmin sanottuna kriittinen piste oli 64 silmukkaa. Onneksi varastossa oli samaa lankaa eri värisenä, ja Nancy Bushin Lailan sukista löytyi lääke. Ihan kivasti onnistui, vaikka itse sanonkin.

Yellow Sock!

Maltoin jättää peiton virkkaamisen hetkeksi ja sain keltaiset sukat alkuun. Piiiitkän odottamisen ja tuskailun jälkeen sain vihdoin käsiini Favorite Socks-kirjan. Kirjassa on monia herkullisia sukkaohjeita ja nyt ensimmäisenä puikoille pääsi Uptown Boot Socks-malli.

Oikeastaan ainoa asia josta en pitänyt kirjassa oli se, että monissa malleissa pohkeen muotoa annetaan puikkokokoa muuttamalla. Se on tällaiselle Nancy Bush-fanille suoranainen loukaus. Muka hieno idea - pah! - silkkaa laiskuutta. Kuka nyt ohutta sukkalankaa lähtee jollain 3,5mm:n puikoilla neulomaan (kuten esim. Undulating Rib-sukissa). Eihän siitä nyt mitään hyvää seuraa!

I was able to put the ripple blanket aside for a while, and started a pair of yellow socks. Last week I finally received my copy of Favorite Socks. There a many delicious sock patterns in the book. I'm starting with the Uptown Boot Socks pattern.

The only thing I did not like in the book is the amount of patterns that suggest to do the leg shaping just by changing the needle size. As a huge Nancy Bush fan I find this quite lazy and not clever. Knitting a fingering weight sock yarn with 3,5mm needles does NOT convince me (as in Undulating Rib Socks pattern).





Lanka on Opalin Mangonkeltaista (väri numero 03), jonka ostin Wolhallasta. Toimii mielestäni mainiosti tässä mallissa. Sukasta tulle lämpimän oloinen ohuiesta langasta huolimatta, koska palmikkokierrot vetävät neuletta kokoon.

This yellow yarn is Opal Uni (colour number 03), which I bought from Wolhalla. I really like this yarn for this pattern. The fabric seems really warm even though it's knitted with fine yarn as the cable twists pull the fabric together.



Halusin kokeilla "eye of partridge"- kantapäätä ja kaivoin vanhan Vogueknittingin hyllystä (Fall 2006). Siinä Ripple Weave-sukissa on tällainen kantapää. Aika kiva.

I wanted to try out the "eye of partridge" heel which can be found in Fall 2006 issue of Vogueknitting. In the Ripple Weave Sock they use this heel pattern. I'm quite happy with it.

Greenish Ribbed Socks

pattern: - (k3,p1 ribbing, 60 stitches, short-row heel and toe)
yarn: Wollmeise Wellensittichvogel, 70 g.
needles: 2,35mm AERO dpns

comments: The yarn is lovely, the socks are comfy... what else is there to say?! Oh, the Wollmeise yarn - you just can't beat the yardage: I used 70 grams for these socks (the leg is not very long) and I still have 88g. left! So it's actually a 160 g. hank!

kommentit: Lanka on ihanaa, sukat ovat mukavat ja pehmoiset... mitäs muuta niistä osaisi sanoa? Ai niin, sukkiin meni 70 grammaa (sukkien varsi ei tosin ole kovin pitkä) ja lankaa jäi jäljelle 88 grammaa. Eli siitä saisi vaikka toiset samanlaiset. Vyyhdissä oli siis yhteensä melkein 160 grammaa!

I did not lie yesterday when I told you that this ripple crochet blanket has taken over my life. I have abandoned all the other project and I just live for the next stripe! And think about Albers.

Kun eilen mainitsin että elämääni on tullut tämä uusi tärkeä virkkaus(!!!)projekti, niin en yhtään liioitellut. Kaikki muut keskeneräiset on autuaasti unohdettu ja odotan vaan seuraavan raidan aiheuttamaa värireaktiota.



After some wide striping with the darker and lighter tones in the beginning, I'm now trying to organize the colours the following way: dark-light-dark-medium-dark-light etc. But I'm deciding the colours as I go.

Kun huomasin että tummemmat ja vaaleammat sävyt alkoivat muodostaa leveämpiä raitoja, päätinyrittää seuraavaa rytmiä: tumma-vaalea-tumma-keskivaalea-tumma-vaalea jne. Mutta päätän varsinaiset värit sitä mukaa kun teen.

Kopioin myös viime aikoina hyvin suosittua virkattua zigzag-peittoideaa. Varoittava sana tähän: siihen jää TODELLA helposti koukkuun (hehe)! Viime viikolla kun tätä tein pikkutunneille asti hartiat jumissa ("vielä yksi raita!") niin tuli vähän sellainen olo että olikohan tämä sittenkään niin hyvä idea...?!
Peitosta on tulossa aika leveä, eli valmista on turha odottaa ennen vuotta 2010.

I'm also following the recent trend of ripple stitch crochet blankets. People, this stuff is SO addictive. I have a weakness for stripes, but the other night when I was in wee hours crocheting "just another stripe" with my shoulders already stiff, I was having second thoughts... maybe this wasn't such a bright idea after all?!
Anyway, this is a really wide blanket, so we can expect it to be ready in year 2010, not sooner.

Wollmeisen ihana lanka on aiheuttanut viimeaikoina vähän päänsärkyä. Ensin kävi näin:

After the second increase - WHEEEEEE - the yarn started to pool like crazy. I decided that I will not have any of that... and took to Plan B:



Ja Pomatomus-sukka.... lähti hyvin käyntiin ja mallineule on mukavan haastavaa mutta loogista... valitettavasti vain neuloin (jostain minulle täysin mystisestä syystä) 2mm:n puikoilla ohjeen mukaisten 2,75mm:n puikkojen sijaan. Ja tietysti sukasta oli tulossa aivan liian pieni. Tulevaisuudessa sovellan ohjetta varmaan kynsikkäiksi, 2mm:n puikoilla näyttää tulevan juuri sopivat minun ranteelleni!

And the Pomatomus sock... started off really well, and I really liked the stich pattern. It's ambitious but logical. Unfortunately I started (for some obscure reason) knitting with 2mm needles instead of the 2,75 needles the pattern asks for. Obviously the sock would be way too small. Anyway, it fits my wrist perfectly, so I see some of those lovely fingerless Pomatomus gloves in the future....



Sitä inspiraatiota odotellessa teen kuitenkin ihan basic-ribbisukkaa tästä undulaatinvärisestä langasta
(kauheet paineet, että tuleeko noi yhdyssanat ja pilkut oikein!! :-P)

In the meanwhile I'm knitting a totally basic ribbed socks with short-row heel. It doesn't pool badly, so I cannot stop. I'm afraid of breaking the spell!

White Chalet Socks

pattern: Chalet Socks by Nancy Bush in Folk Socks
yarn: Regia Silk, colour 002, 65 g.
needles: 2mm addi dpns

comments: I showed considerable strength of character and finished my white socks during the last week. Regia Silk is a very nice yarn and the socks are beautiful, but they are just not me. I prefer a less busy pattern I guess.

I found the Chalet Socks pattern easier than the Bayerische socks (which I started but then ripped as I found them too fiddly) but all those tiny cables knitted through back loop are very time-consuming. I made a small mistake in the center cables but you can hardly notice it. I made the leg a bit shorter (I convinced myself that i might run out of yarn, but I think it was pure laziness!). I switched the k2,p2-ribbing to 1x1 twisted rib, and I do prefer it.

kommentit: Osoitin huomattavaa luonteenlujuutta ja tein viime viikon aikana toisen valkoisen sukan valmiiksi. Regia Silk on ihanan pehmeää ja sukat on kauniit , mutta jotenkin ne eivät ole minun näköiseni. Varmaankin annan ne lahjaksi.

Tämä Chalet Socks -ohje on mielestäni Bayerische-sukkia helpompi (mutta kyllä näissäkin on aikamoinen väsääminen - uskomattoman hidasta neuloa noita palmikkovonksutuksia suuntaan ja toiseen!) .Se ei tietenkään estänyt minua lukematta kaaviota vähän miten sattuu ja keskimmäisistä palmikoista puuttuukin joku kiepautus mutta se ei todellakaan haittaa. Tein sukkien varsista hieman lyhyemmät (vakuutin itselleni että lanka olisi voinut loppua kesken, mutta todellisuudessa kyseessä oli varmaankin laiskuus!). Tein joustinneuleen kuten bayerishe-sukissa enkä 2o-2n-joustinta kuten ohjeessa neuvotaan. Tämä versio on mielestäni kauniimpi.
