When I'm not sniffing (Kool-Aid flavors), fondling (Lorna's Lace sock yarn) or bending (the plastic needles) these novelties, I'm knitting the green thing:

Regia Tibet Socks

pattern: a mix of basic patterns from Nancy Bush's books: 64 stitches, welsh heel, round toe (men's size 42)
yarn: Regia Tibet 4066, 90 gr.
needles: 2.5mm Addi dpns
comments: This was the first time I used a self-striping yarn. I found it quite amusing, especially if you are not going to do anything fancy pattern-wise. The stiping was interesting: It looks like basic stiping with noise. The yarn was ok, I'm curious to see if the socks really live up to the 10 year guarantee!

kommentit: Ensimmäinen itseraidoittuva sukkalankakoikeilu. Ihan ok, aika viihdyttävää neulottavaa. (Varsinkin jos ei suunnitelmissa ole mitään kommervenkkejä mallineuleen kanssa). Tein ihan perussukat, pakko oli kuitenkin tehdä walesilainen kantapää. (Ihje Nancy Bushin kirjasta).Odotan mielenkiinnolla täyttääkö Regia lupauksensa - 10 vuoden takuun!

Mamluke Socks

pattern: Mamluke Socks in Folk Socks by Nancy Bush
yarn: Novita 7 Veljestä (purple), Tricots Brancal Escocesa (black) - total 130 g.
needles: 3,5mm

comments: I modificated the pattern to do a man's size by changing to thicker yarn and needles. I also did a shorter leg. I did a basic mistake when knitting these socks: I changed the order I held the yarn, and you can see that in the finished socks: they are not equal. I liked the pattern, I might do another pair in nicer colours. I would change the heel though, maybe try to do a short row version.

kommentit: Tein sukista miesten koon muuttamalla langan ja puikot paksumpiin. Tein sukan varresta lyhyemmän. Koska sukat jäivät usein tauolle, tein ihan perustavaa laatua olevan virheen: muutin lankojen järjestystä. Siksi sukat eivät ole aivan samanlaiset.Toisessa korostuu enemmän musta, ja toisessa lila väri. Malli oli kiva, saatan tehdä lahjaksi toisetkin. Tekisin kyllä kauniimmissa väreissa! Ja tuo kantapää on vähän omituinen, olisi ehkä asiallista tehdä sen tilalle vaikka tiimalasikantapää.

Surprise Gifts

Kun tulin keskiviikkona töistä kotiin, minua odotti yllätyspaketti. Eräs ystäväni oli ostanut minulle Saksasta sukkalankaa! Ihanaa! Ensimmäinen itseraidoittuva lankani ja ensimmäinen Regia-lanka! (Väri on Regia Tibet Color 4066)

When I got home on Wednesday, I had a surprise gift waiting for me. A friend of mine had sent me Regia sock yarn she had bought from Germany. So exiting! My first seft-striping sock yarn AND first opportunity to try Regia yarn! (It's Regia Tibet Color 4066)



Edellisenä päivänä oli posti tuonut toisenkin paketin: siskoni lähetti puuttuvan langan Mamluke-sukkia varten ja oli laittanut bonuksena mukaan Tallinnasta ostamansa Addin 2,5mm:n sukkapuikot. No ei mennyt kauaakaan kun näiden Saksalaisten kohtalo oli sinetöity ja sukat alulla. Teen miesten sukat, 64 silmukkaa puikoilla. Tämä itseraidoittuvalla langalla neulominen on hyvin viihdyttävää ja Addit ovat ihanat, todella painavat mutta liukkaat kuin olisivat öljytyt.

The day before I had got another package: my sister sent me some yarn to finish the Mamluke socks and some 2,5mm Addi dpns she bought from Tallinn. Wow! Of course it was a matter of seconds before the faith of the two Germans were joined. I'm making man-size socks with 64 stiches. Quite entertaining, this self-striping yarn business. And I'm loving the Addis... they are very heavy, but oh so slick and fast!

A Glimpse of Pre-Blog Knitting

Marsvin ystävällisesti kyseli edellisen postauksen kuvassa vilahtaneesta mekosta. Se on mielestäni ihan onnistunut ja päätinkin kuvata sitä ihan kunnolla. (Kun ei tässä oikein muuta esiteltävääkään ole!)

In last post's comments I was asked about the dress Ines was wearing. As I think it is quite nice, I decided to take some pictures. (And as I have nothing else to show you , knitting-wise!)



Mekko on tehty ihan oman ohjeen mukaan. Parasta siinä on se, että se on täysin saumaton! Aluksi neuloin putkena ja liitin lopuksi olkasaumatkin silmukoita jäljitellen yhteen. Lanka on 100% puuvillaa, puikot 3mm.

The pattern is my own. What I like the most is that there are no seams. I knitted the dress with a circular needle, and at the end joined the shoulder seams with kitchener stitch. The yarn was 100% cotton, 3mm needles. The heart was made with some leftove beads I had.

A Droopy Piece of Coral

Miten tätä oikein pidetään?!

How are you supposed to wear this?!

Tarkoituksena oli tehdä keväthuivi äitienpäivälahjaksi. Väri ei ole oma suosikkini, mutta mitä sitä nyt ei äitinsä eteen tekisi! Valitettavasti virkkaaminen on vähän rasittavaa ja eikä lopputulos ole mieleen. Ei tarpeeksi hörhö, mutta ei myöskään tarpeeksi asiallinen. Äitienpäivä ylihuomenna, mikä neuvoksi? (No joo, eihän se kuitenkaan ehdi ajoissa perille... pitäähän sen vielä matkustaa Suomeen asti). Mitä jos huiviin lisäilisi vähän jotain kukkia tai jotain?

This was supposed to be a cute Mother's Day gift for my mother. This colour is not one of my favourites, so maybe that casted a bad vibe over the project... I also very much prefer knitting to crochet. The scarf is not frilly enough, but it is not serious either. Now what - Mother's Day in Finland is day after tomorrow. (Well the scarf wouldn't have made it anyway, it still has a couple of thousand kilometers to travel to it's destiny) What if I add some flowers?

Cotton Log Cabin Blanket

Tämä projektiin sain innostukset monille tutusta Mason-Dixon Knitting-blogista. Tarkemmin sanottuna tämä postaus sai minut hyppäämään tuolista (työajalla!) suoraan läheiseen lankakauppaan hamstraamaan puuvillalankaa. Ja nyt, kaksi vuotta myöhemmin, ylpeänä esittelen valmiin puuvillapeiton!

The beginnings of this cotton blanket are entirely to blame on Mason-Dixon Knitting! It was this particular post that got me straight to the yarn shop to buy a big bag of cotton yarn. And now, two years later, I proudly present to you the finished Log Cabin Blanket!



pattern: basic log cabin squares, garter stitch edging
measurements: 1,25m x 1,95m (with edging)
yarn: Tricots Brancal cotton yarn, 1800g.
needles: 3,0mm

comments: as I said, this was a long-term project, and I think that was the only way I could manage it. Knitting the colourful squares was a lot of fun, but putting them together is trickier than one might think. I spent at least two evenings trying out different compositions. This could be avoided if I had knitted the squeares following some kind of plan, but it was much more interesting this way.
By the way: I'm convinced that the blanket has some kind of special powers: it gets small boys (that do not sleep during the day anymore!) to have a little afternoon nap! Very convenient! And this when it wasn't even finished yet...

kommentit: Kuten sanottu, tämä oli tällainen pitkän tähtäimen työ. Näitä neliöitä oli mukava tehdä, mitään tarkkaa mallia tai suunnitelmaa ei alunperin ollut. Lankoja ostelin sitä mukaan kun ne loppuivat ja värit päätin matkan varrella. Eri väriyhdistelmiä oli kiva kokeilla, mutta niiden yhdistäminen isommaksi pinnaksi olikin hieman mutkikkaampi juttu. Pari iltaa meni erilaisia sommitelmia mallatessa. Koko olisi voinut isompi, mutta enää en jaksanut yhtään neliötä tehdä lisää...
Olen muuten vakuuttunut että peitolla on jotain maagisia voimia: se saa isot pienet pojat nukkumaan päiväunet! Ja ei edes ollut aivan valmis vielä!
