Stripy Scarf

stripy scarf FO

pattern: none, just casted on about 400-500 stitches and knitted garter st.)
yarn: about 350 g. of yarn (mostly 100% merino wool)
needles: 4mm addi circular, 80cm long

stripy scarf turban

comments: this really was the perfect tv knitting project: about 500 stitches and plain garter stitch! The scarf ended up being very long - more than 2,5 meters. In Scarf Style there's a project (color on color scarf) with an i-cord fringe, which I adapted to this one. The i-cords look like stripy worms!

Scarf Style-kirjassa on yhdessä huivissa (color on color) i-cord hapsut, nappasin idean sieltä. Ne näyttävät ihan raidallisilta karvamadoilta.

Tämä olikin tämän vuoden viimeinen tekele! Hyvää Uutta Vuotta kaikille!

This was the last FO of 2006! Happy New Year to you all!

regia socks size 25

comments: This yarn was a really nice surprise. I found it really pleasant to work with and the 50 g. skein I had bought was more than enough for these small socks. I started to knit with a bit too small needles, but when I noticed my mistake it was too late to change them.

I have a new digital camera, which is considerably better than my old one. But I cannot seem to get the colours right! I adjust the White Balance over and over again and still have to fix the colours afterwards. Frustrating! Well, today the lightning is not famous either... :-D

The Annual WIP Analysis

Hello again! For me it's that time of the year when you get to gather all your WIPs in broad daylight...

long cardigan almost finished

The honour of being the first one falls to this long cardigan. Now it has been waiting the zipper being attatched for almost a year! Shame on me! I finally stretched my mannequin to my real measures (after only four years!) and put the cardigan on. I thought it might be a good idea to let it stretch a bit before attatching the zipper. But I swear - this one cannot wait til the next winter!

blue hue almost finished

Lisää vaatetta itselle! Siniraidallinen villatakki on ollut koko ajan vaiheessa (siis viime viikkojen ajan). Itse asiassa napituskaistale on parhaillaan puikoilla...

More clothing to self! This blue cardigan has been back on my needles the last few weeks. I already started the button band, so it's not looking that desperate.

stripy scarf almost finished

Lisää raitaa! Tämä on neulomisen osalta valmis! Sain "loistavan" idean ja päätin hapsujen sijasta tehdä i-cord rastahapsut. No se vähän on hidastanut valmistumista... köh köh.

More stripes: I actually have finished the knitting on this one, but got the glorious idea of doing some i-cords on the ends. And that has - er - slowed it down a bit.

stripy alpaca gloves

Pojan villatakki on vetskaria vailla, tytön sukkia on kaksi paria kesken...

Oh there's some more stripy stuff... I just lost my interest in these... but when I try them on they are kind of nice. Should I finish them?

There are some more old WIPs that have been kind of forgotten lately - like the Phildar Blouson for my son, and couple of pairs of socks for my daughter (I find knitting really small socks kind of a drag - so fiddly!).

brown knee high WIP

So that this wouldn't be too boring for you, I have started some more project to add on my list. Like these dark brown knee high socks. The yarn is italian sock yarn, nothing special, but the colour is very nice. I wanted to do a solid coloured version of Meg Swansen's arch shaped socks on the VK fall 2006 issue (oh no - I just googled and found out there's an errata which substitutes the whole pattern! Good thing I haven't started the the arch shaping yet!)

ex red kimono shawl

Aloittelin myös tällaista punaista pitsineuleshaalia. Malli on "Kimono shawl", Cheryl Oberlen Folk Shawls-kirjasta. Lanka on ihanaa suomalaista kampavillalankaa Pirtin Kehräämöstä.

I also started a new shawl, The pattern is Kimono Shawl from Cheryl Oberle's Folk Shawls. The pattern is easy, the yarn was lovely (fine finnish wool from Pirtin Kehräämö) but the shawl started to look wide enough to be a bedspread. So it is no more. But I'll cast on again, after getting the new ebony circular to replace the broken one (Yes! I got an email which says that they are going to send me a new one!)

Hyvät uutiset: tämän vuoden (toimiston) joulukortit ovat valmiit!

The good: this year's christmas greetings (for the office) are done!

Huonot uutiset: jonkin aikaa sitten tilasin Klass & Gessmannilta puikkoja. Tänään sain kovasti odottamani paketin, ja siellä (erittäin huonosti pakatut) eebenpuupuikkoni olivat aivan säpäleinä. Kyllä harmittaa. :-(

Bad News: A while ago I ordered some knitting needles from Klass & Gessmann. Today the package finally arrived: my most wanted item - the ebony circular - was completely shattered in the poorly assembled package. I'm so sad. :-(

It Feels Like My Birthday...*

Olo on kuin synttärisankarilla! Salainen ystäväni lähetti ihanan paketin:

My Secret Friend sent me all these goodies:

opal bambus und regia silk

Siellä oli lankaa... laadukkaita saksalaisia sukkalankoja! Nämä ovatkin ensimmäiset Regia Silk-keräni. Olen sitä usein hivellyt lankakaupoissa Suomessa käydessäni, ja kerran jopa tilasinkin Saksalaisesta nettikaupasta pari kerää. Valitettavasti paketti hävisi Euroopalaisen Postin Mustaan Aukkoon, enkä ikinä saanut lankojani. Lanka tuntuu ihanalta, siitä voisi tehdä vaikka ylellisiä sormikkaita - siis sukkien lisäksi. Bambulanka tulee pitämään seuraa jo yhdelle omistamalleni kerälle. Niillä tulee olemaan mukavaa kimpassa.

There was Yarn... lovely German sock yarn. These are actually the first skeins of Regia Silk I own! I have fondled this yarn many times in yarn shops and once even ordered it from Germany. Unfortunately the package got lost in The Black Hole of European Postal Parcels and I never got it. This yarn feels so soft, it would make lovely gloves... (or socks, of course). And the Opal Bamboo will keep company to the other skein of the same yarn I already have!

folk knitting in estonia

Then there was The Book. I really do not know how I could live in denial and think that I can survive without this book. I do not only find it lovely... It moves me to the point that I get all teary eyed. Forget everything I said the other day, when whining about stranded knitting. I want to knit about everything out of this book. And I'm determined that on my next visit to Finland, I shall take the boat to Tallinn and find Nancy Bush and ask if she wants to adopt me. (I think that she's studying (even more) Estonian lace nowadays).

stitchmarkers

(Salmiakki on painoinsa arvoinen kultaa näillä leveyspiireilla!) Yllätyksen kruunasi vielä mitä ystävällisin kirje. Kiitos, Majtessa! En olisi voinut toivoa parempaa pakettia! :-)

Here are the first stitchmarkers I have ever owned! Aren't they lovely? And - best of all - they are handmade by my Secret Pal herself. Amazing skill. I'm looking formard to using them.

There was also a small Advent Calendar and Finnish sweets (which I promply put to a safe place where the rest of the family can't find them - this stuff is worth its weight in gold for me!) She also wrote me the nicest letter. Thank you Majtessa! I couldn't have hoped for more! :-)

knitscene magazines

Ottakaa tekin huikka Cavaa! Kippis!

I also got another package! A week ago I ordered some copies of Knitscene magazines directly from the Interweave site. Yes: one WEEK ago. If I had known that they send them so fast, I would have ordered some old issues of IK as well. (But sincerely I thought that if I receive these before Easter I'm really lucky! :-D) There are some cute patterns in the autumn issue, (for example the green tweedy hoodie).

Now I have to go again -we have friends visiting from Spain. Nice but keeps us busy! have a sip of Cava! Cheers!

Could It Be....?

aviso

Tämä on suurella todennäköisyydellä Se Salainen Paketti. On suuri mysteeri, miksi postinkantaja on merkinnyt paketin ilmoituskorttiin päivämääräksi 30.11. ja jättänyt sen postilaatikkoon eilen (siis 5.12.).... pakettikortin perille tulo on siis luultavasti kestänyt kauemmin kuin paketin tuli suomesta Portugaliin. No, huomenna sen pääsen vihdoin hakemaan. Jännittävää!

There a big chance that this might be The Secret Package (the one from my secret friend). Now there's one detail I find really strange: the date when the note was issued is 30.11. and I got it yesterday (six days later). So it is possible that it took more time to get me the note from the post office (which is about two kms from my home) than it took for the package to cross Europe. Doesn't make much sense, does it...? Well, tomorrow I'll finally be able to go and get it. How exciting!

big sock-little sock

These are the socks I'm working on right now: the small sock is knitted with Regia Color 5440, and the other one is the first half of my second pair of Log Cabin Socks. This time I'm using a sport weigt yarn and 3,5mm needles. This is one strange pattern: even with switching the yarn to a thinner one, you can actually make a man size sock using the pattern for men. The ones I knitted with thicker yarn have quite a different feel though - they are knitted so dense they feel almost like boots!

Keefely Mittens

keefely mittens FO

pattern: Keefely Mittens by Jolene Trace in Handknit Holidays
yarn: Lopo Xavier & Cia. Phoebus (100% Wool), Dark Violet and Lavender Blue (about 50 g each) and a bit of Red
needles: 3mm aluminium dpns

comments: my relationship with colourwork is a bit difficult: I like the result but get annoyed with having to look at the charts all the time. So mittens are about the largest stranded knitting project I can handle! (These charts are quite easy, though, and you could easily learn them by heart).

The Advantages of Multi-Project Mode

Do you remember me blabbing about the positive aspects of having multiple projects going on at the same time? Well now it pays off: I haven't managed to knit almost anything this week, but after weaving in the ends of a couple of socks I had left to marinate, voilá!, here's some FOs for ya! ;-)

Jaywalker Socks II

jaywalker II FO

pattern: Jaywalker by Grumperina in MagKnits
yarn: Opal Handpainted (colour 18), about 70 g
needles: 2mm (for the ribbing) and 2,5mm addi dpns

jaywalker II with shoes

kommentit: aluksi näytti todella lupaavasta, mutta kantapään jälkeen lanka alkoi tietysti tehdä temppujaan, siis sähiköidä! Lanka on tunnultaan oikein miellyttävää, aavistuksen pehmeämpää kuin aikaisemmin käyttämäni Opal langat.

comments: at first everything was going extremely well, but after the heel the yarn started to flash, which annoys me quite a bit. This Opal yarn is very nice to knit with, it seems to me much softer that the other Opal yarns I had used before.

Son's Zebra Socks

son's zebra socks

pattern: - a basic toe up sock
yarn: Opal Regenwald Zebra 50g.
needles: 2,5mm addi dpns

comments: I knitted these socks toe-up, because I wanted to use up all the leftover yarn from these socks. My first idea was to do the socks for my daughter, but the black and white pattern of the yarn didn't work at all for that amount of stitches.

kommentit: Tein nämä sukat kärjestä aloittaen, koska halusin tuhlata kaiken langan mikä kerässä oli jäljellä. Ensin meinasin tehdä pienemmät sukat (tyttärelle), mutta langan mustavalkoinen kuvio ei sopinut lainkaan sille silmukkamäärälle. Syntyi mitä kummallisimpia kuvioefektejä.

son's zebra socks FO

Joyful Hats

joy hats

pattern: none, (the one in the front was knitted from the top down in order to use up all the yarn)
yarn: Joy, single ply 100% merino, two 50 g. skeins (in two different colourways)
needles: 4,5mm aluminium dpns

kommentit: tässäkin oli motiivina loppulankojen tuhoaminen. Rainbow-huivista oli jäänyt kaksi kerää lankaa. Outoa kuinka raidoitus on ihan erilainen eri väreissä!

comments: I made these hats with the leftover yarn from the Rainbow Scarf. I had two 50 g. skeins, one in each colourway. It's curious how the striping is totally different in the two skeins!

*******

regia 5440

I have tried to behave and only keep knitting the Keefely Mittens (I always have this struggle with fair isle after a while...) But one evening I could not help myself - I had to start this tiny little sock. Doesnt't the yarn look yummy? Socks that Rocks? Lorna's Laces? - no, it's Regia! :-D

*******

Olin Helin salainen ystävä! Viimeinen pakettini saapui loppuviikosta. Oma SNYkin lähetti viime viikolla sähköpostia, paketti on kuulemma matkalla! Ehkä viikonlopun jälkeen.... ;-)

Dotty Dotpants

Cable Twist Socks

cable twist socks

pattern: Cable Twist Socks from www.helloyarn.com
yarn: Lopo Xavier & Cia. Phoebus, colour no.?, 90 g.
needles: 3mm aluminium dpns

cable twist socks toe

kommentit: Mainio malli, nopea ja helppo. Ainoa muutos alkuperäiseen ohjeeseen on se, että tein sukan kärkeen vähän enemmän sileää neuletta ennenkuin aloin kaventamaan.

comments: A really nice pattern, easy and fast to knit. The only modification I made was knitting a few more rows of stockinette st. before starting the toe decreases.

cable twist socks without feet

These socks really need a foot inside them!

keefely mittens WIP

Kirjoneulelapasetkin edistyvät hitaasti mutta varmasti. Malli on siis "Keefely Mittens" Handknit Holidays -kirjasta.

The mittens are growing slowly but smoothly. The pattern is "Keefely Mittens" from Handknit Holidays.

dotty needle cases

The highpont of the week was making these two needlecases. I'm seriously considering quitting my day job and start sewing needle cases full-time (just kidding!). I couldn't bear the idea of giving away the needle case I made for my Secret Friend so yesterday I made these for myself.

Olen todella tyytyväinen tähän sukkapuikkokoteloon. Sekosin täysin tästä pilkullisesta nauhasta!

I'm very happy with how the dpns case turned out. I'm in mad love with this dotty ribbon.

Mainitsinko että olen heikkona tähän nauhaan? ;-D

Did I mention I'm crazy for this ribbon? ;-D

straight needle case inside

straight needle case button

Parasta siinä on kukkanappi!

The other needle case I made is for straight needles (which I barely use nowodays). I came out ok but the brown one is my favourite! In my opinion the best part in this dotty needlecase is the flower button.

Feeling Inspired

Sain eilen Cable Twist-sukat valmiiksi. Kuvia kuitenkin vasta lauantaina...
Puikoille hyppäsi samantien uusi työ. Tunnistaako joku mikä malli on kyseessä?

I finished the Cable Twist Socks! It was smooth sailing without any incidents. But you'll have to wait until Saturday for the photos...
I imediately casted on for another new project (this one is also a Christmas present). Do you recognize the pattern?

Jos tarvitset tänään oikein erityistä luovaa potkua, mene Craftsanityn arkistoihin ja kuuntele Amy Karolin (tuttu Angry Chicken-blogista) tai Denyse Schmidtin haastattelu (juu, juuri SEN kirjan tekijä!). Niistä saa ison annoksen inspiraatiota!

If you want to feel inspired today, go to Craftsanity podcast archive and listen to Amy Karol's (from angry chicken blog) or Denyse Schmidt's interview (yes - Denyse as in Denyse Schmidt Quilts). Just lovely.

Oi kiltti postinkantaja, tuothan minulle pian uusimman Interweave Knitsin, Elizabeth Zimmermanin kirjan (jonka tilasin jo yli kuukausi sitten!), tai edes pienen yllätyksen SNY:ltä....!

Please Mister Postman, would you pleeeeeeaaaaase bring me the new IK, the Elizabeth Zimmermann book I ordered over a month ago, or a little something from my secret friend.....?

Guess what... I've been sewing!

Olen jo kauan ihastellut näitä maailman hienoimpia puikkokoteloita. Minun Salainen Neulova Ystäväni omistaa aikamoisen sukkapuikkokokoelman. Niinpä päätin tehdä itse maarraskuun yllätyksen: sukkapuikkokotelon. Otin mallia noista hienoista, ja tulihan tästäkin yllättävän onnistunut!

For a long time I have been eyeing these fantastic needlecases, I think they are the most beautiful I have seen. My Secret (Finnish) Knitting Friend has quite a collection of dpns. So I decided to make her a needlecase inspired on these designs. It came out surprisingly well!

needlecase for secret friend

I have to admit that I would like to keep it. I might have to make some for myself - TODAY!

needlecase button detail

Neulepuolellakin oli tarkoitus tehdä (joulu)lahjoja: puikoilla on Cable Twist-sukat. Malli on Hello Yarn-sivuilta, mainio ohje. :-D

I have also been knitting gifts: these are Cable Twist Socks. It is an excellent free pattern by Hello Yarn. I never paid any attention to this pattern until I saw Grumperina's socks as in the photos (in the pattern pages) the socks are lacking the feet inside! I really like the pattern, but was surprsed with the little amount of stitches when doing the toe shaping. The socks came out way too short for the giftee. I ripped and tried again. Somehow it still is too short! But as they fit MY feet perfectly, well I decided not to fight the destiny and just keep them myself. Now I just have to come up with some another present...

Hurry hurry hurry

No, onneksi viikolla on ollut ilonaiheita! Mariannelta tuli paketti, josta löytyi muunmuassa nämä sukkalangat ja puikot:

I am not happy: it is Sunday, the sun is shining and it is 20 degrees outside. And I'm at work... so this is going to be a quick post.

Luckily enough I have a few nice things to show you! I got my package from Germany with some sock yarn and new needles:

Trekking Pro Natura_Pony Rosewood

Trekking Pro Natura wool-bamboo-mix in really stylish brown tones, and beauuuuutiful rosewood dpns in 2,25mm size. I am not sure if I am able to use these needles, they are so perfect and fragile.

Trekking Pro Natura 1603

Tässä vielä lähikuva Pro Naturan sävyjen ihanuudesta.

Here's a closeup of the Pro Natura loveliness.

Opal Hundertwasser

Tilasin myos Opalin Hundertwasser-inspiroitunutta lankaa. Vaikka olisi Novitan!) Lanka on kerässä aika pelottavan näköistä... mutta nuo pitkittäin neulotut sukat näyttävät hienoilta. Löysin niihin ohjeenkin, ihan englanniksi. (klikkaa "see english pages" ja sitten "bits and bytes")

Valmiita sukkiakin olisi, kunhan vaan löytyisi aikaa päätellä lankoja ja ottaa kuvia. Ensi viikolla!

I also got some Opal Hundertwasser inspired yarn. It looks kind of scary in the ball, but I think the sideway knitted socks are relly cool. I already found a pattern for them in english. (click "see english pages" and then "bits and bytes" )

I have some FOs but no time to weave in the ends or craft the toes or take pictures... hopefully next week! Bye!

When Bad Yarn Turns into Decent Things

Nyt takki olisi tässä vaiheessa. Löytyisikö vapaaehtoisia kokoonkursijoita ja erityisesti vetoketjunkiinnittäjiä?!

The Phildar Blouson for my son is in this state right now. Any volunteers to do the rest.... especially to attatch the zipper?!!! Please....?

Phildar Blouson almost done

Isoveljeä löytyi kaapista alunperin 800 grammaa, takkiin meni noin 550 grammaa - mitäs nyt tehtäisiin?

I originally had 800g of this yarn. I used about 550 g for the jacket and I wanted to do something with the rest - so....

Logcabin Socks

log cabin socks FO

pattern: Log Cabin Socks by Anne Woodbury in Handknit Holidays
yarn: Novita Isoveli, colour 270, 180g
needles: 4,5mm aluminium dpns

comments: My main inspiration to do these socks was to get rid of the two balls of this yarn I had left. But to my surprise, they came out quite nice! Naturally lacking the merino softness of Rowan Cork, the gauge was right on spot with 4,5mm needles and as the yarn has 25% polyamid content, they will probably be quite long-lasting... There was something strange in the pattern in the heel flap part - the photo and the pattern did not match. I was too lazy to look up the errata, so I just made up that part (did the 2-2 ribbing until the heel turn). This was a quick and fun knit.

new sock WIPs

Yesterday evening I felt a sudden and strange urge to cast on for new pairs of socks - I started these Zebra socks for my son and the red stripy knee highs for my daughter (They seem quite christmasy, don't they? Or is it just me?). I still haven't finished the Jaywalker pair number II....

Latvian Socks and Knitterly Genes

latvian socks FO

pattern: Latvian Socks by Nancy Bush in Folk Socks (Interweave Press)
yarn: Vuorelma Satakieli 100% wool, colour 560, exactly 100g
needles: addi inox 2mm

comments: these where the first Nancy Bush socks I knitted with the yarn recommended in the pattern! Either Nancy is a tighter knitter or has a bigger foot than I - I had to make a couple of extra decreases as the sock was way too loose for me. And you really should take it seriously when Nancy says " these socks took almost every inch of the yarn called for". She really means it. I did a smallish/medium size (european 38) and even so wanted to omit one pattern repeat to make sure not to run out of yarn.... (but I got distracted and made all the ten repeats anyway :-D). After finishing the first sock I weighted it - both the sock and the remaining yarn weighted the same 52 g. So it was a risky business, but luckily eneugh I did not run out of yarn - there was a generous amount of less than a meter left when I finished the second sock (see photo below)! Satakieli is a lovely yarn and has a lot of colours - but for some mysterious reason I have this "let's just be friends" -feeling about this yarn...

Vahingossa sorruin tuossa viime viikolla tilaamaan lisää sukkalankoja täältä. Oli pakko - sieltä saa välikoon ruusupuisia sukkapuikkoja - IIKS!. Nyt tuli kiire tuhlata edellisen tilauksen langat! Aloitin toiset Jaywalkerit Opalin käsinvärjätystä harmaasävyisesta langasta (väri 18). Tämä lanka on i-h-a-n-a-a. (Voisiko joku kertoa oikeat termit, kiitos!?)

Last week I ordered some more sock yarn from here. I had to - they had 2,25 mm rosewood dpns - SQUEAL! I realized I had not used almost any of the yarn I bought there a couple of months agos, so I started my second pair of Jaywalkers using Opal Handpainted (colour 18). This yarn is l-o-v-e-l-y. I really like to knit this pattern, even though I have some issues with the fit. But there's no pooling or flashing in sight - so far!

Jaywalker II WIP

Postissa tuli myös uusia kirjoja ja lehtiä:

I also got some new books and magazines:

new books and mags

Mason-Dixon Knitting - ihanaihanaihana. Ostin tämän inspiraation enkä niinkään ohjeiden takia! Suosittelen.
Hardwear - Jewelry from a Toolbox - Olin varsin utelias tämän opuksen suhteen - koruja rautakaupan materiaaleista. Valitettavasti kirja on vähän turhan simppeli. Muutama varteenotettava idea kuitenkin löytyy.
Kaksi Phildar uutuutta: Pitchoun automne-hiver 2006-2007 ja Tendances hiver 2006-2007.Taattua laatua kuten tapana on. Kuvissa muutamia suosikkeja:

Mason-Dixon Knitting - loveitloveitloveit. I did not buy this book so much for its patterns as for the inspiration and -oh-my- does it deliver!
Hardwear - Jewelry from a Toolbox - I was really curious about this one. Unfortunately I found the book way too simplistic and basic. Some usable ideas though.
Two Phildar magazines: Pitchoun automne-hiver 2006-2007 and Tendances hiver 2006-2007 . Many nice pattens, as usual. Here are some of my favourites of the two:

Aivan vertaansa vailla. Eli sieltäpäin ne neulegeenit tulevat!

But the greatest and most surprising of all novelties since my last post is that I have found a new relative - a fellow blogger! Discovered by chance while exchanging e-mails about wooden sockblockers and portuguese yarn. Tikru and I share the same great-grandmother! (The knitter, spinner and crocheter extraordinaire in my family was my grandmother from my father's side. That's where the knitterly gene comes from.)
