Packing Up

The most difficult part of packing up is to decide what yarn to take with you!

Lomia!

I'll be on holiday the next couple of weeks. I'll blog esporadically if I have access to internet. Take care!

First Country Sock is Done!

Haa, sain ensimmäisen Country Socks- sukan valmiiksi. Koko on noin 44-45 eli saa siinä aika kauan tuota jalkaosaa neuloa!

I finished the first sock! It is size 44-45 (european) so there was quite a lot of knitting finishing befrore reaching the toe! The size seems just right (the pattern is written to make a woman's size sock, but I changed to thicker yarn and needles).

No Illegal Substances

Ihan heti aluksi haluan selvittää tätä viime päivien äkillistä tuotteliaisuutta: en ole alkanut nappailla piristäviä, vaan lapset ovat jo Suomessa lomalla. Voi tätä ikävää - ja voi tätä vapaa-aikaa! Tänään olen jo ehtinyt vaikka mitä .... kuten laittaa siniraidallisen villatakin hihat ja takaosan pingotumaan. (Koko huolestuttaa minua. Neulomatta on enää toinen etukappale ja napituslista, enkä ole aivan vakuuttunut mitä tästä tulee...)

First I want to clarify that the sudden productivity of the past few days is not due to any illegal substances, but to the fact that my kids started their summer holiday before me and are already in Finland. Oh how I miss them! And OH what to do with all the free time!? Today I already started blocking some of the pieces of my blue hue cardigan. (I'm a bit concerned about the size, the only thing missing is one of the front pieces and the button band, but I'm not at all sure this is coming out right...)

blue hue pieces blocking

Paniikki! Sukat puikoille ja äkkiä! (Onneksi sain sopivasti nuo edelliset valmiiksi). Nancy Bush tulee taas apuun: mallina Country Socks (Folk Socks -kirjasta), malli muuttuu sopivasti miehen jalkaan sopivaksi kun vaihdoin langan ja puikot paksumpiin (Novita Nalle, puikot 2.75mm - tämä Nalle-lanka tuntuu muuten paljon mukavammalta kuin punainen tai vaalea violetti, varmaan johtuu vähäisemmästä värjäyksestä). Malli on muuten ihanan perinteinen.

Five days until I head to Finland and suddenly I realized that my Dad is having his birthday any day soon. Panic! Cast on new pair of socks! I once more picked a Nancy Bush pattern: I started Country Socks from Folk Socks book. Changing to thicker yarn and needles will give man sized socks. I'm really liking the pattern so far.

Sukista puheen ollen.

Talking about socks: this week I bought a new pair of shoes just to have an excuse to knit some of the toe socks that you can find here, here or in this forthcoming magazine. (Ok, the fact that they were 70% off had some influence, too!)

Girl's Cardigan

girls cardigan FO

pattern: Phildar Pitchoun automne-hiver 2004-2005
yarn: Novita Merino Wool, colour 103 (discontinued), 200g.
needles: 3mm (for the ribbing) and 3,5mm

kommentit: neuloin tämän villatakin osat jo noin vuosi sitten, eli en edes muista minkä koon tein. Luultavasti 4v.

comments: I knitted all the parts about a year ago, so I do not remember many details... I "think" the size is 4 yrs., now it fits just so-and-so. I didn't do the charming belt, because a) I didn't have faith that it would stay on, and b) I couldn't find a buckle that would match the mother-of-pearl buttons.

Simple Trekking Socks

simple trekking 01

pattern: Simple Trekking Socks, a Free Pattern from http://www.mimknits.blogspot.com/
yarn: Trekking XXL, colour 110 , 70 g (shoe size 38)
needles: 2,25mm Pony Pearl dpns

simple trekking 02

Trekking on kivaa sukkalankaa. Joskus tulee tälläinen "kato äiti, mun varpaat on tulessa"-efekti kuten allaolevassa kuvassa näkyy. Varpaista puheenollen: kolmen puikon päättely kärjessä oli ihan kuningasajatus!

comments: I casted on less stitches than in the pattern, I only used 64 stitches, and the fit is ok. I really like the subtle rib variaton detail in the toe and cuff.
Trekking is a nice sock yarn, it has (I don't know how to put it in words) kind of "dry" touch, if compared for example with Fortissima Colori Socka, which seems quite similar colour-wise. (Even though the colour changes are bolder in Trekking yarn, and sometimes can provide a "look mom, my toes are on fire"- effect which you can see in the photo below.)
Oh - and talking about the toe - the three needle bind off was a really good idea!

Porto min.21ºC / max. 36ºC

Vaikka lämpötilat tällä hetkellä ovatkin aika -köh- kesäisiä, haaveilen silti syksyn villapaidoista. Interweave Knitsin syysnumeroa voi jo ihailla täällä.

Listalleni pääsivät heti:

Equinox Yoke Pullover - Michele Rose Orne
Supernova Pullover - Norah Gaughan
Weekend Pullover - Véronik Avery
Gatsby Girl Pullover - Jodi Green

These four jumped straight to my to do- list from Interweave Fall 2006 Preview. It is really hot here, but that doesn't stop me from drooling over these designs.

meandlaurie

Viime viikon huipentuma oli Laurie Andersonin konsertti torstaina. Ihana!

The high point of last week was a Laurie Anderson concert on thursday. It was awesome!

opal sockwool

I was also very enthusiastic about this package: a box full of german sock wool I had ordered from Mariannes Opalwolle. These are mainly Opal yarns: Regenwald Zebra, Opal UNI and a lovely handpainted one in tones of gray. I also got some Regia 3-ply, which I think will be perfect for some Vintage Socks.

i can crochet a circle

I bought a new 3 mm crochet hook and it works better. But now I'm thinking about skipping the flowery stuff and making a crocheted flag of Japan!

A Visual (Knitting/Crochet) Diary of A Week

sock basket

Kolme oivaa syytä ostaa Zara Home:n alennusmyynnistä sukkakudinkori:
a) Enää ei voi hyvällä omallatunnolla ripotella keskeneräisiä sukkia pitkin kirjahyllyä. Korissa kiikutetaan sukkapari näppärästi paikasta toiseen.
b) Siihen mahtuu vain yksi keskeneräinen sukkapari kerrallaan. (Eli multisukka-WIPpi-stressiä)
c) Lankakerä pyörii korissa mukavasti, eikä tule lattialla likaiseksi.

Three reasons to buy a specific basket for sock knitting:
a) There is no justification for leaving the unfinished pair of socks all over apartment. You just carry them around with you in the basket.
b) You can only fit in one pair of socks at the same time. Prevents multiple-socks-WIP-syndrome. (at least in theory)
c) The skein rolls nicely in the basket while knitting, instead of rolling on the (not so clean) floor.

Uusi Trekking-sukka vaiheessa. Ohje mukailtu täältä. (Simple Trekking Sock)

A new Trekking sock in progress. The pattern (modified, of course) is from here. (Simple Trekking Sock)

closing toe

Tämä malli muistutti vähän näitä sukkia, ja mielestäni sopii hyvin kolmen puikon päättelyyn kärjessä. (Inhoan ommella silmukoita jäljitellen, vaikka lopputuloksesta pidänkin. Siksi poloinen raitasukka on odotellut inspiraatiotani kokonaisen viikon - turhaan!)

This pattern reminds me of these favorite socks, and works well with three needle bind off. (I hate to close the toe with kitchener stitch: the stripy sock spent the whole week waiting for my inspiration - in vain!)

lousy crochet hook

Modakin tuli.

I received a new issue of Moda, a finnish magazine. The only thing that caught my eye was this flower bag - I didn't like it as a bag, but I thought it would make a really cute circular cushion. Unfortunately I didn't have a crochet hook in the right size, and now I am not that convinced...

childs phildar UFO

I decided to finally finish this UFO! I realized that if I don't do it within a month, it will not fit my daughter anymore. That was a good incentive and now it is done. Sometimes I leave things in stand-by for months, when all that is needed is a half an hour to finish them. It's ridiculous!
