Cold Mountain, Warm Island

Huh!

I'm lucky that I don't suffer from dust allergies, as the layer of dust covering this blog would probably kill me. A long absence was due to plain lazyness and work related prolonged anxiety. Now, with a month's worth of Summer holiday behind me, I'm feeling with a lot more energy!

Loman ensimmäinen osa vietettiin Mallorcalla, pitkäaikaisen ja ihana ystävän luona. Kiitokseksi majoituksesta ja kaikesta neuloin hänelle Cold Mountain-shaalin kesän Knittystä.

The first part of out vacation was wery well spent in Mallorca, in a lovely friend's lovely house. As a thank you gift I knitted her the Cold Mountain Shawl from the Summer issue of Knitty.

coldmountain 03

pattern: Cold Mountain by Kieran Foley from Knitty, Summer 2009
yarn: Handpaintedyarn.com Lace, color Emerald Viv, about 130g
needles: 3.25 mm addi lace circs

comments: This was a very easy lace pattern. I made one more repeat on each side of the middle section as I wanted to make sure that the shawl is long enough. My only complaint is how the shawl starts and ends with no edge. I fudged a *k2tog, yo* border, trying to make it similar to the long side border.

FYI: The photos were taken in front of the house where we were staying! Pretty spectacular!

Ihana kaksiviikkoinen vietettiin, mutta neulomispuolella tulokset olivat aika heikot. Rannalla sentään vähän sukkaa tuli neulottua...

Lovely time was had, but not a lot of knitting got done. Some sock knitting in the beach though...

It's a shawl! It's a stole! It's a blanket?

Leaf and Trellis Shawl

leaf and trellis III

pattern: Large Rectangle in Leaf and Trellis pattern by Jane Sowerby
from Victorian Lace Today
yarn: Pirtin Kehräämö Kampalanka 90 TEX x 3, colour 4 (undyed dark brown), 4 x 100g
needles: 4mm ebony circ + 4mm dpns for the border

leaf and trellis IV

It took me years to get this one done. If I remember correctly, I knitted the center panel during two different summer vacations in Finland. Then it always just got abandoned in my knitting basket for month and months. But a couple of weeks ago, I just decided to finish it. I had this vision that it would be really beautiful and warm... which took quite an amount of imagination as is the case with many lace projects.

struggle with the shawl border

The border seemed to take forever and forever...

Reunapitsin neulominen vei ikuisuuden...

lace row counting

And then I lost my row counter and have to use a more archaic method. But I did not give up.

Ja jossain vaiheessa sohva söi kerroslaskimenkin ja piti siirtyä perinteiseen metodiin. Mutta en antanut periksi!

blocking the beast

And then, finally, I got to block it and I knew I had been right! It came out very large, about 75cm x 220cm, but light and warm. Rustic luxe, as I was told in an Ravelry comment. Couldn't put it better myself.

leaf and trellis II

Now we are very pleased with ourselves.

Nyt olemme hyvin muikeina.

Juno Regina Stole

juno regina det

pattern: Juno Regina Stole by Miriam L. Felton
yarn: Wetterhoff Sivilla, 70% wool 30% tussah silk, 916, 3 x 50g skeins (50g=250m)
needles: 3,75mm Addi lace

juno regina 2

comments: This was a fairly easy and quick knit! The middle part of the stole is so easy you can knit it with your eyes closed (or nailed to the TV screen). I did everything according to the pattern - they say it doesn't come out exactly symmetrical, but it looks ok to me. I really like this yarn - and the colour (even though it's almost impossible to reptoduce in photos).

Lace Ribbon Scarf

lace ribbon scarf FO

pattern: Lace Ribbon Scarf by Veronik Avery from Knitty, Spring 2008
yarn: Wollmeise 80/20 Twin in Rittersporn, 1 skein (about 150g)
needles: 3,75mm Addi lace circs

lace ribbon scarf 2

comments: Nice and easy. I didn't change anything in the pattern, but can't remember how many repeats I worked. I used up all of the 150g Wollmeise skein. After blocking the scarf measures about 25cm x 200cm.

kommentit: Helppo ja joutuisa mallineule. Tein huivin ihan ohjeen mukaan, en muista montako mallikertaa, neuloin koko 150g:n vyyhdin loppuun. Pingotuksen jälkeen huivin mitoiksi tuli noin 25cm x 200cm.

Violet Shawlette

violet shawlette

pattern: Clementine Shawlette by Michele Rose Orne in Interweave Knits Spring 2007
yarn: Wollmeise Sockenwolle (100% wool) in Veilchen (Violet) 125g
needles: Addi lace circs 3,75mm

comments: My new Addi Lace needles and the Wollmeise sock yarn was a match made in heaven. Knitting this shawl was pure joy. The finished shawlette - hmmm, I don't know. I love the colour, but I have doubts with those little thingies in the ends. Anyway, this will be a gift for my mother, so she'll have to find out how to wear it!

I've started (and already finished the first one) my red Project Spectrum socks. This is the first time I'm knitting with Lorna's Laces sock yarn and I have to say that it really is a pleasure. Too bad there's very little tone variation in this hue, I can't wait to try out some of the other semi solid colours!

Warming Up!

dishcloth closeup

Värikäs lanka on Anchorin Magiclinea, merseroitua moniväristä puuvillaa. En todellakaan tiedä mihin tarkoitukseen olen aikoinaan ostanut yksittäisen kerän. En myöskään tiedä onko merseroitu puuvilla sopivinta tähän käyttoön, mutta mitä pienistä.

I knitted a pair of cotton dish clothes following the pattern from Mason Dixon book. Nice and easy, and using up those solitary skeins or left overs makes you feel oh so efficient. The colourful yarn is Anchor Magicline, a mercerised cotton. I haven't got the faintest idea what purpose I have originally bought this yarn for, or if it's the most suitable for this use, but who cares.

dishcloths

Shawlette on viittä vaille valmis.

Shawlette is almost ready. I have a few more rows to go and then I can join the pieces. My idea is to knit both pieces till the third row of the pattern repeat and then graft them together on the wrong side. I have really enjoyed this project. The yarn (Wollmeise sock yarn) and the needles (Addi Lace circs) are absolutely fantastic. Oh, and the pattern is nice, too.

I hope to have some new FO photos tomorrow...

One More Present!

I got one more present for Christmas. It arrived by post, and took a little longer than expected...

victorian lace today

Hetihetiheti! (En tietenkään halua ketään yllyttää tuhlailemaan) :-D

...but it was SO worth the wait! This book is quite amazing! I'm short of superlatives trying to describe it. If you like knitting lace, go and get it. NOW!
:-D

myrtle leaf shawl with two balls of merinosilk

Tähän malliin (Myrtle Leaf Shawl) löytyisi varastoista lankaakin - 100 grammaa Grinascon merinosilkkiä, jonka ostin Suomesta noin vuosi sitten. Uskomatonta että kahteen pieneen kerään mahtuu yli kilometri!

I have 100 g of Grinasco Merinosilk in my stash, that would be perfect for this pattern. It's amazingly thin - there's over 1 kilometer of yarn in these two balls!

large rectangle in leaf and trellis pattern

Minulta löytyisi myös 400 grammaa Pirtin Villalankaa (360m/100g), ruskehtavan harmaata luonnonväristä. Siitä voisi tulla aika valtaisa Print O 'the Wavea muistuttava shaali.

I also have 400 g (360m/100g) of Pirtin Villalanka, a three ply wool in natural brownish grey. I think it might make a nice and huge shawl. I hope the yarn is not too thick, though.

melon pattern shawl

Samaa lankaa löytyy myös tummanpunaisena. Melon Pattern-mallista tulisi varmaan aika puolukkainen huivi. Tekisin sen kyllä ilman pitsireunaa, vähän yksinkertaisempana versiona.

I have the same yarn in dark red. Can you imagine this pattern in that colour? Wouldn't it be like red berries, all lined up? I would knit it without the lace border, with just garter stitch edge (as they also suggest in the book)

on the needles now

On täällä vähän neulottukin.

I've also been doing some knitting. On the needles right now: a cable sweater for son (Phildar pattern) and the most ill-fitting socks ever (but they are really pretty!). More of these later on!
