It Feels Like My Birthday...*

My Secret Friend sent me all these goodies:



Siellä oli lankaa... laadukkaita saksalaisia sukkalankoja! Nämä ovatkin ensimmäiset Regia Silk-keräni. Olen sitä usein hivellyt lankakaupoissa Suomessa käydessäni, ja kerran jopa tilasinkin Saksalaisesta nettikaupasta pari kerää. Valitettavasti paketti hävisi Euroopalaisen Postin Mustaan Aukkoon, enkä ikinä saanut lankojani. Lanka tuntuu ihanalta, siitä voisi tehdä vaikka ylellisiä sormikkaita - siis sukkien lisäksi. Bambulanka tulee pitämään seuraa jo yhdelle omistamalleni kerälle. Niillä tulee olemaan mukavaa kimpassa.

There was Yarn... lovely German sock yarn. These are actually the first skeins of Regia Silk I own! I have fondled this yarn many times in yarn shops and once even ordered it from Germany. Unfortunately the package got lost in The Black Hole of European Postal Parcels and I never got it. This yarn feels so soft, it would make lovely gloves... (or socks, of course). And the Opal Bamboo will keep company to the other skein of the same yarn I already have!



Siellä oli kirja. En tiedä miten olen kyennyt selviytymään ilman tätä kirjaa aikaisemmin. Tässä liikuttaan jo sillä mystisellä vyöhykkeellä että kirja ei ole mieletäni vain "ihana" vaan se saa minut suorastaan likkuttuneeseen tilaan. Unohtakaa kaikki mitä vikisin kirjoneuleista pari päivää sitten. Haluan neuloa suurimman osan kirjan malleista ja ehkä seuraavalla Suomen vierailulla hyppään Tallinnan laivaan ja etsin Nancy Bushin käsiini, ja pyydän häntä adoptoimaan minut. (Nancy tietääkseni liikkuu sielläpäin, ja perehtyy (lisää) eestiläisiin pitsineulemalleihin.)

Then there was The Book. I really do not know how I could live in denial and think that I can survive without this book. I do not only find it lovely... It moves me to the point that I get all teary eyed. Forget everything I said the other day, when whining about stranded knitting. I want to knit about everything out of this book. And I'm determined that on my next visit to Finland, I shall take the boat to Tallinn and find Nancy Bush and ask if she wants to adopt me. (I think that she's studying (even more) Estonian lace nowadays).



Tässä ovat elämäni ensimmäiset silmukkamerkit! Eivätkö ne ole todella hienoja! Ja arvatkaapa vain onko taidokas SNY tehnyt ne aivan itse? Odotan innolla että pääsen kokeilemaan niitä.

Paketissa oli myös hauska pieni joulukalenteri ja suomalaisia makeisia - ne eivät päässet kuvaan, koska piilotin ne niin varmaan paikkaan etteivät muut perheenjäsenet pääse niihin käsiksi. (Salmiakki on painoinsa arvoinen kultaa näillä leveyspiireilla!) Yllätyksen kruunasi vielä mitä ystävällisin kirje. Kiitos, Majtessa! En olisi voinut toivoa parempaa pakettia! :-)

Here are the first stitchmarkers I have ever owned! Aren't they lovely? And - best of all - they are handmade by my Secret Pal herself. Amazing skill. I'm looking formard to using them.

There was also a small Advent Calendar and Finnish sweets (which I promply put to a safe place where the rest of the family can't find them - this stuff is worth its weight in gold for me!) She also wrote me the nicest letter. Thank you Majtessa! I couldn't have hoped for more! :-)



Vielä kaiken kukkuraksi sain viikko sitten tilaamani Knitscene lehdet. Kyllä! VIIKKO sitten - siis suoraan Interweavelta. Jos olisin tiennyt, että ne tulevat noin nopeasti, niin olisin samalla tilannut pari vanhaa IK:n numeroa, joita en omista. (Mutta Interweaven vauhdin tuntien ajattelin että jos nuo pääsiäiseksi ehtivät niin ihan kiva...) Syksyn lehdessä on parikin kivaa mallia (erityisesti tuo vihreä palmikkoneulehuppari on kiva), kevään lehti oli vähän niinkuin heräteostos...

Nyt mentävä taas - Espanjasta kavereita käymässä, mukavaa pitää mutta hulinaa riittää! Ottakaa tekin huikka Cavaa! Kippis!

I also got another package! A week ago I ordered some copies of Knitscene magazines directly from the Interweave site. Yes: one WEEK ago. If I had known that they send them so fast, I would have ordered some old issues of IK as well. (But sincerely I thought that if I receive these before Easter I'm really lucky! :-D) There are some cute patterns in the autumn issue, (for example the green tweedy hoodie).

Now I have to go again -we have friends visiting from Spain. Nice but keeps us busy! have a sip of Cava! Cheers!

Could It Be....?

Tämä on suurella todennäköisyydellä Se Salainen Paketti. On suuri mysteeri, miksi postinkantaja on merkinnyt paketin ilmoituskorttiin päivämääräksi 30.11. ja jättänyt sen postilaatikkoon eilen (siis 5.12.).... pakettikortin perille tulo on siis luultavasti kestänyt kauemmin kuin paketin tuli suomesta Portugaliin. No, huomenna sen pääsen vihdoin hakemaan. Jännittävää!

There a big chance that this might be The Secret Package (the one from my secret friend). Now there's one detail I find really strange: the date when the note was issued is 30.11. and I got it yesterday (six days later). So it is possible that it took more time to get me the note from the post office (which is about two kms from my home) than it took for the package to cross Europe. Doesn't make much sense, does it...? Well, tomorrow I'll finally be able to go and get it. How exciting!



Tässä työnalla olevat sukat. Regia Color 5440:sta siis nuo pikkuiset sukat, ja toiset Log Cabin sukkani (tai siis ensimmäinen puolikas). Log Cabineihin päätin kokeilla Seitsämää Veljestä, koska muutkin ovat sen hyväksi havainneet. Ja 3,5mm:n puikoilla ja miesten mallin silmukkamäärällä tuleekin ihan hyvänkokoinen miehen sukka. Mutta Isoveljestä tuli tukevampaa jälkeä. Kunhan nämä valmistuvat niin on syytä juhlia: tämä oli viimeinen varastoistani löytyvä kokonainen kerä Seiskaveikkaa! (Tämä on ostettu jo pari vuotta sitten, eikä edes tunnu kovin muoviselta - tulee melkein haikea olo!)

These are the socks I'm working on right now: the small sock is knitted with Regia Color 5440, and the other one is the first half of my second pair of Log Cabin Socks. This time I'm using a sport weigt yarn and 3,5mm needles. This is one strange pattern: even with switching the yarn to a thinner one, you can actually make a man size sock using the pattern for men. The ones I knitted with thicker yarn have quite a different feel though - they are knitted so dense they feel almost like boots!

Keefely Mittens

pattern: Keefely Mittens by Jolene Trace in Handknit Holidays
yarn: Lopo Xavier & Cia. Phoebus (100% Wool), Dark Violet and Lavender Blue (about 50 g each) and a bit of Red
needles: 3mm aluminium dpns

comments: my relationship with colourwork is a bit difficult: I like the result but get annoyed with having to look at the charts all the time. So mittens are about the largest stranded knitting project I can handle! (These charts are quite easy, though, and you could easily learn them by heart).

kommentit: kirjoneuleet ovat valmiina kivoja, mutta mielestäni vähän rasittavia neuloa: kaaviota pitää seurata tarkasti ja langanjuoksuja tarkkailla. Niinpä lapaset ovat jotakuinkin suurin hanke mihin ryhdyn tätä tekniikkaa käyttämään. (Tässä mallissa kuvio on kyllä aika looginen, ja sen oppisi helposti ulkoa jos vaan jaksaisi vähän keskittyä).

The Advantages of Multi-Project Mode

Muistatteko kun suitsutin monen samanaikaisen työn etuja? No nyt siitä on hyötyä! En ole saanut viikolla mitään ihmeellistä aikaiseksi, mutta kun päättelin parit marinoitumassa olleet (muuten valmiit) sukat niin avot, johan on esiteltävää! ;-)

Do you remember me blabbing about the positive aspects of having multiple projects going on at the same time? Well now it pays off: I haven't managed to knit almost anything this week, but after weaving in the ends of a couple of socks I had left to marinate, voilá!, here's some FOs for ya! ;-)

Jaywalker Socks II



pattern: Jaywalker by Grumperina in MagKnits
yarn: Opal Handpainted (colour 18), about 70 g
needles: 2mm (for the ribbing) and 2,5mm addi dpns



kommentit: aluksi näytti todella lupaavasta, mutta kantapään jälkeen lanka alkoi tietysti tehdä temppujaan, siis sähiköidä! Lanka on tunnultaan oikein miellyttävää, aavistuksen pehmeämpää kuin aikaisemmin käyttämäni Opal langat.

comments: at first everything was going extremely well, but after the heel the yarn started to flash, which annoys me quite a bit. This Opal yarn is very nice to knit with, it seems to me much softer that the other Opal yarns I had used before.

Son's Zebra Socks



pattern: - a basic toe up sock
yarn: Opal Regenwald Zebra 50g.
needles: 2,5mm addi dpns

comments: I knitted these socks toe-up, because I wanted to use up all the leftover yarn from these socks. My first idea was to do the socks for my daughter, but the black and white pattern of the yarn didn't work at all for that amount of stitches.

kommentit: Tein nämä sukat kärjestä aloittaen, koska halusin tuhlata kaiken langan mikä kerässä oli jäljellä. Ensin meinasin tehdä pienemmät sukat (tyttärelle), mutta langan mustavalkoinen kuvio ei sopinut lainkaan sille silmukkamäärälle. Syntyi mitä kummallisimpia kuvioefektejä.



Joyful Hats



pattern: none, (the one in the front was knitted from the top down in order to use up all the yarn)
yarn: Joy, single ply 100% merino, two 50 g. skeins (in two different colourways)
needles: 4,5mm aluminium dpns

kommentit: tässäkin oli motiivina loppulankojen tuhoaminen. Rainbow-huivista oli jäänyt kaksi kerää lankaa. Outoa kuinka raidoitus on ihan erilainen eri väreissä!

comments: I made these hats with the leftover yarn from the Rainbow Scarf. I had two 50 g. skeins, one in each colourway. It's curious how the striping is totally different in the two skeins!

Olen yrittänyt olla kiltti neuloja, ja sinnitellä Keefely-lapasten kanssa sortumatta harhateille. (Aina unohdan että kirjoneule on aika tuskaista pidemmän päälle!) Yhtenä iltana oli pakko aloittaa kuitenkin ihan pikkupikkuhetken tällaista pikkupikkusukkaa.... Eikö lanka näytäkin aika herkulliselta? Ei uskoisi että se on ihan normaalia Regian lankaa.

I have tried to behave and only keep knitting the Keefely Mittens (I always have this struggle with fair isle after a while...) But one evening I could not help myself - I had to start this tiny little sock. Doesnt't the yarn look yummy? Socks that Rocks? Lorna's Laces? - no, it's Regia! :-D

Cable Twist Socks

kommentit: Mainio malli, nopea ja helppo. Ainoa muutos alkuperäiseen ohjeeseen on se, että tein sukan kärkeen vähän enemmän sileää neuletta ennenkuin aloin kaventamaan.

comments: A really nice pattern, easy and fast to knit. The only modification I made was knitting a few more rows of stockinette st. before starting the toe decreases.



Sukat eivät näytä juuri miltään jos niihin ei tuikkaa jalkaa sisään.

Viikon kohokohta on ollut uusien puikkokoteloiden väsääminen. Harkitsen vakavasti ammatinvaihtoa: ehkä haluan isona kokopäiväiseksi neulakotelo-ompelijaksi! Kun olin tehnyt sukkapuikkokotelon SNY:lleni, totesin että minun on pakko saada itsekin sellainen, mutten en raaski luopua siitä! Eilen otin aikaa ja tein nämä kaksi.

The highpont of the week was making these two needlecases. I'm seriously considering quitting my day job and start sewing needle cases full-time (just kidding!). I couldn't bear the idea of giving away the needle case I made for my Secret Friend so yesterday I made these for myself.





Olen todella tyytyväinen tähän sukkapuikkokoteloon. Sekosin täysin tästä pilkullisesta nauhasta!

I'm very happy with how the dpns case turned out. I'm in mad love with this dotty ribbon.



Mainitsinko että olen heikkona tähän nauhaan? ;-D

Toinen kotelo on suorille puikoille (jotka ovat nytkyään aika vähässä käytössä). Siitäkin tuli ihan ok. Parasta siinä on kukkanappi!

The other needle case I made is for straight needles (which I barely use nowodays). I came out ok but the brown one is my favourite! In my opinion the best part in this dotty needlecase is the flower button.
