Filled with pride!

Joudutte kestämään kun vouhotan Print O'the Wave huivista vielä kerran! Sunnuntaina oli nimittäin h-hetki, eli Sarin häät. Ihan sydämestä otti kun kaunis morsian tuli kirkosta ulos huivi harteillaan. Enää en edes muista oliko siinä kova työ!

Try to bear with me babbling once more about the Print O´the Wave Stole. Last Sunday was the Big Day. And I was so moved when the bride appeared from the church wearing the stole! It was so worth the trouble.






Muiden neuletöiden saralla onkin vähän huonompia uutisia. Kun raitapaitani oli edennyt kainaloihin asti, päätin siirtää silmukat puikolta langalle, jotta pääsisin sitä sovittamaan. Ja sopivahan se oli, mutta huomasin että neuloessani strategisesti vähättelemäni värinvaihtumiskohdat sivussa häiritsivät minua ihan sietämättömästi. Voitte itse havaita kuvista , että paha se on. Ja kun edessä olisi ollut ehdottomasti työn pahin osa eli hihojen tekeminen... päätin että ehkä joutaa tyynyksi. Laitan sen nyt joksikin aikaa jäähylle, katsotaan sitten mitä siitä syntyy. Nyt kyllä vähän nolottaa kun vouhotin niin paljon tästä venäläisestä liitoksesta! (Luikkii häntä koipien välissä piiloon yleistä buuausta)

The news about the other projects are not so good. The stripy Hourglass Sweater is in crisis. When I reached the point were I should start the sleeves, I decided to pass the stitches from the needles to waste yarn, in order to try it on. And it fitted, actually it was a very good fit. But the sections where I had changed the yarn colour, and so successfully ignored while knitting the body, were awful. Unbearable. And as the next step would be the worst part of the sweater, the sleeves (30 cm circular - changing the yarn colour every row....) I decided that it just might end up being a pillow! I'll give it some time to think about it. I'm so ashamed that this didn't work out! I practically sold you the "russian join" as the solution for world peace. What a pity.





Tästä takaiskusta turhautuneen päätin viikonloppuna aloittaa tosi helpon työn. (Ja halusin myös ottaa hyötykäyttöön 30 sentin addi-pyöröt, jotka olin ostanut vartavasten edellämainittuja hihoja varten). Nappasin torstaina ostamaani 7 veljestä, ja aloitin ensimmäisen joululahjan teon! 60 silmukkaa ja suoraa putkea joustinneuleena niin kauan kuin sielu sietää. Tätä pystyi tekemään lätkämatseja seuratessakin! (Ja hei! arvatkaa miten liitin langan yhteen kesken työn - aivan - venäläisellä liitoksella, eli oli siitäkin taidosta nyt jotain hyötyä!)

After the previous frustration I had to start something easy and fast (and find some use for the 30 cm circular addis I had purchased for the above mentioned sleeve). And it does not get easier than this: I grabbed some yarn I bought the other day from the factory outlet, casted on 60 stitches and knitted in ribbed pattern for about 60 cm. This will be the first of my Christmas knitting this year! (I know- it is disgusting to start this early!)



Huomenna suuntaan taas etelään, eli tänään oli viimeinen shoppailupäivä Helsingissä. Menitasta Fortissima Colori Socka Coloria, väri 2419. Ja Hobboksista Nancy Bushin Folk Socks -kirja. Tämä kirjaostos menee täysin Terhin syyksi. Pitääkö niitä ihania norjalaissukkia siellä esitellä!

Today was my last day in Helsinki. I did some last minute shopping. I gote some Fortissima Colori Socka Color, colour 2419. And, blaming entirely Terhi from Mustaavillaa, I bought Folk Socks by Nancy Bush. I mean what's a woman to do when they just throw those fabulous norwegian stockings to your face?! Well, buy the book and knit one!



Vielä lopuksi esittelen pari ihanaa nappia, jotka löysin jostain laatikon kätköista ja aion viedä mukanani. Tuo iso musta nappi on muistaakseni jostain isoäitini takista, se on mielestäni jotenkin japanilaisvaikutteinen.

Here are two buttons I found from the back of a drawer and will take to a better home. The larger one used to be in my late grandmother's coat, I think. I think it has a japanese thing going on, which I love.

Feeding the addiction

Tänään oli ihana päivä: aurinko paistoi, lunta maassa ja asteita -3. Täällähän voisi jopa asua talvella jos tällaista olisi joka päivä. ;-D

Kävimme siskon kanssa Novitan tehtaanmyymälässä Lauttasaaressa. Tarkoituksenani oli ostaa vain ihan muutama kerä Nallea sukkalangaksi. Mutta, mutta... huomasin että jotain oli ilmassa kun astuimme sisään myymälään - siellä kuhisi kuin muurahaiskeossa. Uusia pussilankoja oli yllin kyllin. Saalistusvietti nousi heti pintaan ja silmät kiiltäen kaivelimme ja tongimme laatikoita. Mukaan tarttui yhteensä 4,5 kiloa lankaa. Onneksi minulle osuuteni on *vain* 1,5 kiloa. Sisko on selvästi pahemmassa jamassa kuin minä, vaikka onkin tuoreempi käyttäjä.

Today was such a beautiful weather here: the sun was shining and it was -3 Celsius. If it were always like this, one could even consider living here during the winter!

Today I visited the Novita factory outlet with my sister. And there was plenty of cheap yarn. We left with 4,5 kg! But only 1,5 kg belongs to me. So I think I have to take credit of introducing my sister to the addiction quite successfully!



Huomasin etten osaa ostaa lankaa ellei sille ole jotain käyttöä jo mielessä. Ostin nyt Novitan Isoveljeä, 800 grammaa (hehe - ei mahtunut kuvaan), väri on poistoväri, sellainen armeijanvihreä. Hinta oli aivan naurettava 1,65 Euroa/ kerä. Lanka ei ole mitenkään superihanaa, mutta ihan ok. Ja jos reilulla kymmenellä Eurolla saa langat villapaitaan, niin minä en ainakaan turhia nirsoile.

Isoveljestä ajattelin tehdä aikuisversion tästä Phildarin neuletakista. Tein jo mallitilkkua. Ideana olisi tehdä nuo pystyraidat vyötäron kohdalle, jolloin ne vetäisivät neuletta kokoon kavennusten tapaan.

I tend to buy yarn with a project in mind. Now I bought Novita Isoveli in army green colour. I´m not crazy about this yarn, but it is ok. (And if you get the yarn for a sweater or a cardigan for less than fifteen Euros, you can´t be too picky. I'm talking about 75% wool)

I want to knit an adult's version of this Phildar cardigan. I already made a swatch. The idea is to do the vertical stripes in the waist section, so that they pull the fabric together, working just like decreases. Let´s see if that works.



Ostin myös punaista nallea ja punaraita seitsämää veljestä. Nämä jo ensi joulun lahjoja ajatellen! Aivan - aion aloittaa lahjatuotannon tänä vuonna jo ennen kesää! Tyyliin "sukat kuussa ja syksyllä paitoja itselle".

I also bought plenty of red yarn. Solid red and self striping red. Already thinking of Christmas. Yes, you heard me! This year my motto will be: " a pair of socks a month (for gifts) and autumn spent knitting sweaters for myself!"

Teddy bears in snow

Tulin eilen Suomeen viikoksi. Hääjuhliin! (Tai siis häät kestävät vain yhden päivän) .
Tänään ampaisin heti Soukan Menitaan, joka on parinkymmenen minuutin kävelymatkan päässä majapaikastani. Ostin hillitysti: addi fanikamaa eli puikkonalleja ja puikkomitan. Ja vain kolme kerää lankaa!

Yesterday I arrived to Finland for a week long holiday. Actually I´m here for the famous wedding party (famous for those who have been following the Stole Saga). Today I went to a local yarn shop and did some moderate shopping: I bought some addi fan stuff like teddy bear needle huggers and needle size meter, and only three balls of yarn!



Drops Alpaca (ihanaa lankaa!) värit 3770 ja 7895. Haluaisin tehdä tästä langasta Rib and Cable Mittsit uudesta Interweave Knitsistä.
Todella edullisen poistovärikerän Novita Nallea (väri 085), tästä varmaan tulee jotkut Vintage-sukat.

Drops Alpaca (lovely yarn!) colours 3770 and 7895. I bought these with the Rib and Cable Mitts pattern in mind, from the new issue of Interweave Knits.
I also bought a really cheap ball of Novita Nalle (colour 085), which might become some Vintage Socks.

Cobalt Blue Socks

En sitten perjantaina aloittanutkaan mitään vintage-sukkia, vaan tein ihan omasta päästä ja yhdestä 50g:n kerästä nilkkasukat. Lankaa meni 48 grammaa, eli täällä eletään veitsen terällä!

yarn: Sandnes Lanett (100% merino wool), colour 5836, 48g
needles: 2mm (60 stitches)

comments: I did a picot edge and short-row heel and toe. I grafted the stitches together on the "bottom side" of the sock so you can't see the uneven stiches. I really liked this yarn - and the colour! I just had one 50g. ball of it, which was just enough. I used 48g. Living on the edge here!

kommentit: Tein sukkiin tuollaisen koristeellisen reunan, mutta en nyt mitenkään muista miksi sitä suomeksi sanotaan. Kantapää oli tiimalasi, ja kärkikavennukset samalla tekniikalla. Lopuksi ompelin silmukoita jäljitellen yhteen jalkapohjan puolella. (Silmukoita on enemmän kuin sukan kärjessä, mutta niitä on mielestäni helpompi ommella kun pysyvät sileänä). Lanka oli ihanaa. Ja se väri!

Print O'The Wave Stole

I did it!

Eilen vihdoinkin koitti se ikimuistoinen hetki: sain Print O'the Waven valmiiksi! Valitettavasti neuloin viimeiset silmukat sairaalassa, jossa olin pitämässä seuraa äkillisesti sairastuneelle perheenjäsenelle. Eli suunnittelemani shamppanjapullojen korkkien poksauttelu ja yleinen hysteria jäi nyt kokematta. Onneksi toipuminen sujuu hyvin!

Olin jo viime viikolla hankkinut tällaisen seinäeristelevyn, josta tein tee-se-itse pingotusalustan. Piirsin siihen apuviivat pysty- ja vaakasuuntaan 5cm:n välein. Se oli loistava idea, niistä oli korvaamaton apu kun asettelin märkää huivia mittoihin.

Yesterday was the big day: I finally finished knitting the Print O'the Wave Stole! I had pictured a big party: champagne bottles popping, general hysterical joy to celebrate the moment. But unfortunately I knitted the last stitches in the hospital, keeping company for a family member who suddenly fell ill. So it was kind of an anticlimax. But do not worry, everything is going smoothly and he is getting better.

I had already purchased this, to do a diy blocking board. I draw horizontal and vertical lines to the board every 5cm. And that, I tell you, was really a great idea as it helped me a lot to get the stole straight with the pins.







Huivi ei ole täydellinen, mutta kyllä se hyvä on. ;)
Parantamisen varaa olisi reunoissa: ne eivät ole aivan symmetriset, johtuen kevennuksista joista en saanut aivan samannäköisiä. Huivi on nyt 60cm leveä ja 210cm pitkä. Odotan mielenkiinnolla miltä se näyttää kuivana.

The Stole is not perfect but it is good. I think the edging is not quite symmetrical, because I can't get the decreases look exactly the same on the both sides. Now the stole measures 60cm x 210cm.

Tänään päivääni on piristänyt postinkantaja! Englannista tupsahti lankaa. Tämä nettikauppa on todellinen löytö! Bargain-osastolta tarttui mukaan ohutta denim-lankaa hintaan £4.40 / 250g kartio, sekä punnalla kerä alpakka-mohair-akryylisekoitetta (44% alpakka, 44% mohair and 12% akryyli). Aika hyvät hinnat, sanoisin!

Today the mailman made my day! A week ago I ordered some yarn from here. I snatched these yarns from the bargain section. There are two 250g. cones of denim yarn, £4.40 each, and some alpaca-mohair-acrylic mix (44% alpaca, 44% mohair and 12% acrylic), which costs £1.00/50g. A really good deal, don't you think?



Denim-langasta oli eniten täpinässä, mutta se on todella ohutta! Otin vertailun vuoksi kuvan Rowan Denimin kanssa.

I was mos enthusiastic about the denim yarn, but it is really thin. I took a photo with Rowan Denim so you can see the difference.

I'm having a serius case of life and work interfering with knitting and blogging. So I'm just stopping by to leave you with some knitting progress photos.

Stripes and Russian Joins

Aloitin siis vauhdilla Raidallisen HG:n. Raidoittaminen on ihanaa, siihen jää totaalisesti koukkuun! Huomaan aina suunnitelevani ainakin neljä raitaa eteenpäin - no niin nyt teen yhden punainen, ja sitten yksi oliivinvihreä ja sitten vielä farkunsinistä.... ja yhtäkkiä kello on yli yksi (yöllä)!

So I jump-started the Stripy Hourglass Sweater. I love doing the stripes, it is totally addictive. I catch myself planning at least four stripes ahead - now I'll do a red one, then one olive green and after that, a blue one - and suddenly it is 1 a.m.!



Palatte varmaan halusta tietää että toimiiko se "venäläinen liitos". Kyllä se toimii! Eikä ole ollenkaan hankala tehdä. Ainoa ikävä puoli on että liitoskohdasta todellakin tulee hieman paksu. Olen nyt hionut strategiaani seuraavasti: vaihdan väriä toisessa sivussa (tai siis suunnilleen siinä missä sivusauma olisi mikäli sellainen löytyisi) parin kerroksen ajan (=tulee paksumpi ja hieman epäsiisti kohta) ja välillä sitten teen puolitoista kierrosta joko kirkkaan- tai tummanpunaisella, jolloin värien vaihtumiskohta siirtyy toiselle sivulle.

I know you are all dying to know if the russian join works! Well yes! It is actually quite simple to make. But it does make a bit of a bulky spot in the knitting. Now I'm changing the colour on the side of the sweater and in order to prevent excessive bulkiness on one side , every now and then I make one and a half rounds with the red yarn, to start to change the colours on the other side.



Nyt joudun pistämään tämän projektin jäihin ainakin viikonloppuun asti. Huivi pitää tehdä valmiiksi ja mielellään pingottaa tänä viikonloppuna. Pitäkää peukkuja!

Now I have to set this project aside and finish the Print O'the Wave Stole. I hope to block it this weekend. Wish me luck!

The Final Spurt

Päätin lopettaa ruikuttamisen ja ottaa loppukirin. Nyt Print O'the Wave huivi on melkein valmis! Enää puuttuu viimeinen reuna, joka neulotaan sivuttain ja liitetään kerros kerrokselta neuloen keskiosan odottamaan jääneisiin silmukoihin. Ja kyllä: olo on väsynyt mutta onnellinen.

I decided to stop whinig and get going. Now the Print O'the Wave Stole is almost finished! I just have to knit the final edging, which is knitted "sideways" and attached in every row to the live stiches left waiting. And yes: I'm feeling tired but happy!



Huomaatte varmaan että olen neulonut koko huivin suorilla puikoilla. Ai miksi? No siksi että ne viime vuoden puolella Saksasta tilaamani pyöröpuikot eivät ole vieläkään tulleet! Tilaus on jätetty 29.12. ja Visaa laskutettu 5.1. Tietääkseni on joku EU:n pykälä jossa aikarajaksi on asetettu 30 päivää tilauspäivästä laskien. Mutta mitä sanoo saksalainen nainen kun alan pommittamaan häntä sähköposteilla ja sanon että haluan a) rahani takaisin tai b) uuden lähetyksen kuriiripostilla, eli parin päivän sisällä. No hän vastaa minulle seuraavasti:

"your order is gone on 5. januar and unsecure shipments takes a time between 3-8 weeks regular in europe is 3 weeks, so I believe it will come the next few days please do not worry, it will come"

Siis heidän mielestään on ihan normaalia että lähetys Saksasta Portugaliin kestää kuukauden! Herne on nenässä ja tosi syvällä. Tuskinpa enää tilaan kyseistä kaupasta.

You might have noticed that I've been knitting the stole with straight needles. Why is that? It's because the circular addis I ordered at the end of last year still have not arrived! I placed the order in 29.12. and my Visa card was charged 5.2. I have started sending e-mails to them asking a) for a refund or b) them sending me a new order by DHL or similar service. But what does the german woman say? (see quote above). So they think it is completely normal - even obvious - that the shipment takes a month to arrive from Germany to Portugal. I am not pleased and shall never again order from their shop.



Aion palkita itseäni tästä huikeasta tehokkuudesta aloittamalla raidallisen hourglassin tänään. Laskeskelin jo ohjeen silmukkamäärät ohuemmalle langalle.

I am going to reward myself for being so productive in the past few days, and I am going to allow myself to cast on for my stripy Hourglass Sweater today. I have already made the calculations for finer yarn.



Tässä on korillinen Novita Woolia, ja pari hassua jämäkerää Nalle ja Floricaa. Niistä raitaa. Olisi kiva jos olisi vähän räväkämpiä värejä enemmän mukana, mutta en todellakaan aio ostaa lisää lankaa tätä projektia varten. Ihanaa! Uusi työ!

Here's a basketful of various dk yarns to stripe up: Novita Wool, Florica and Nalle. It would be nice to have more of the brighter colours, but there's no way I'm going to buy more yarn for this project. Yippee! A New Project!

I'm losing my faith here, people.

Pläähhhh... tänään ensimmäinen mahdollisuus neuloa pari riviä sitten sunnutain. Tätä vauhtia huivi ei valmistu ikinä. Ja kuriirikin olisi tulossa jo ensi viikolla. Apua.

Blah... today was my first chance to knit a few rows of the stole since sunday. At this speed it will never ever get done. And there is one very personal courier coming here next week to take it up north. Help.

In the last post's comments I was asked to show the side panel of the stole. So here it is, dry blocked.



Eli neulomiset ovat jääneet vähiin, ajanpuutteen vuoksi (etelä-Eurooppalainen luumuilu kostuu työpäivien järjettömällä venymisellä - ai siis mikä vapaa-aika?!). Tästä huolimatta olen käyttänyt tänään kaiken liikenevän ajan tutkimalla uutuuksia: Rowan 39, ja Phildarilta tuli taas jotain (onneksi (!) siellä ei nyt ollut mitään erityistä minulle).

So there has not been much knitting this week due to the lack of time. This has not prevented me from surfing and previewing all the novelties today: Rowan 39 mag and yet a new Phildar magazine are out.



Neuleolympialaiset olisivat ihanat, jos en olisi niin tästä henkilökohtaisesta maratonista hyytynyt. En ehdi palautua ajoissa! Itseasiassa jo ennen tämän neuleolympialaisbuumin alkamista ilahduin huomatessani että tulen olemaan Suomessa talviolympialaisten viimeisen viikon (eihän täällä edes tiedetä mitkä sellaiset kisat ovat!). Ihanaa! Vaikka en kisoihin osallistukaan niin aion neuloa kuin heikkopäinen ja katsoa kaiken taitoluistelusta ampumahiihtoon!

I would love to take part in The Knitting Olympics, but I'm right in the middle of this personal marathon. I think I need some time to rest afterwards and knit stuff without deadlines. Actually I realized even before this collective Knitting Olympics frenzy that I'm going to be in Finland during the last week of The Games and was really pleased (here in Portugal they do not even know There is such thing as the Winter Olympics). I will knit like a lunatic even without being an official participant!
