Cold Island, Warm Shawl

Loman toinen osa vietettiin vähän viileämmässä ilmastossa, mutta oikein onnistuneesti kuitenkin. Vanhemmillani on kesämökki saaressa ihan Venäjän rajan tuntumassa. Tai oikeastaan se on rajalla, koska rajapyykkeihin ei ole kuin 100 metriä matkaa. Veneillessä saa olla tarkkana etteivät verkot hujahda väärälle puolelle. Mökillä lempirakennukseni on tämä vanha aitta joka sai toimia kuvausrekvisiittana.

The second part of my vacation was spent in a cooler climate, but it was also a great success. My parents have a summer cottage in an small island very near the russian border. Well actually it is on the border as it's about 100 meters from it. My favourite house there is this small cottage that was used for storage in the old days and here serves as a background for my FO photos.

No modifications on the pattern, just using heavier yarn. It is unbelievably warm. I gave it to my mother, so that she can enjoy her morning coffee outisde, even when the weather starts to get chilly.

Tein ihan ohjeen mukaan, lanka vaan oli huomattavasti paksumpaa. Huivi on ihan uskomattoman lämmin. Annoin sen lahjaksi äidille, jotta hän voi nauttia aamukahvit ulkona laiturinnokassa vaikka ilmat alkavatkin viilentyä.
Idean paksumpaan huiviin sain Nicolen upeasta versiosta.



Sain myös väsättyä napit tähän Tomteniin, joka ehtikin niitä odotella ainakin vuoden. Hyvä jos enää mahtui pojalle päälle! No, takkia ei ole venytetty laisinkaan, eli se varmaan ensimmäisessä pesussa kasvaa aika lailla. Emmin pitkään vetoketjun ja nappien välillä, mutta päädyin lopulta nappeihin. Tein i-cordin reunaan ja siihen piilotetut napinlävet, ihan niinkuin Elizabeth Zimmermann neuvoo. Lisätietoja ravelryssä.

I finally finished this Tomten-jacket for my son. I finished the knitting about a year a go... it's almost too small for him now! (Well I didn't block it, so it probably grows a size when washed fot the first time). My first idea was to put a zipper but I decided to use buttons instead. I made a applied i-cord border with hidden buttonholes, following Elizabeth Zimmermann's instructions. More details on ravelry.

Cold Mountain, Warm Island

Huh! Onneksi en kärsi pölyallergiasta, koska blogia peittävä pölykerros luultavasti saisi minut sairaalakuntoon. Pitkä tauko johtui ihan silkasta laiskuudesta, sekä työasioihin liittyvistä sählingeistä. Nyt takana on kuukauden kesäloma, ja energiaa on runsaasti enemmän!

I'm lucky that I don't suffer from dust allergies, as the layer of dust covering this blog would probably kill me. A long absence was due to plain lazyness and work related prolonged anxiety. Now, with a month's worth of Summer holiday behind me, I'm feeling with a lot more energy!

Loman ensimmäinen osa vietettiin Mallorcalla, pitkäaikaisen ja ihana ystävän luona. Kiitokseksi majoituksesta ja kaikesta neuloin hänelle Cold Mountain-shaalin kesän Knittystä.

The first part of out vacation was wery well spent in Mallorca, in a lovely friend's lovely house. As a thank you gift I knitted her the Cold Mountain Shawl from the Summer issue of Knitty.

yarn: Handpaintedyarn.com Lace, color Emerald Viv, about 130g
needles: 3.25 mm addi lace circs

comments: This was a very easy lace pattern. I made one more repeat on each side of the middle section as I wanted to make sure that the shawl is long enough. My only complaint is how the shawl starts and ends with no edge. I fudged a *k2tog, yo* border, trying to make it similar to the long side border.

kommentit: Tämä oli todella helppo pitsineule. Tein yhden mallitoiston lisää molemmilla puolilla keskellä olevaa kuviota, koska halusin varmistaa että huivista tulee tarpeeksi pitkä. Ainoa mikä ohjeessa jäi harmittamaan oli se, miten se huivi alkaa ja loppuu ilman mitään reunusta. Tein lyhyihin reunoihin *2yhteen, langankierto* reunakehitelman, jotta ne näyttäisivät jokseenkin samanlaisilta kuin pitkät reunat.

FYI: The photos were taken in front of the house where we were staying! Pretty spectacular!

Ihana kaksiviikkoinen vietettiin, mutta neulomispuolella tulokset olivat aika heikot. Rannalla sentään vähän sukkaa tuli neulottua...

Lovely time was had, but not a lot of knitting got done. Some sock knitting in the beach though...

Leaf and Trellis Shawl

yarn: Pirtin Kehräämö Kampalanka 90 TEX x 3, colour 4 (undyed dark brown), 4 x 100g
needles: 4mm ebony circ + 4mm dpns for the border



It took me years to get this one done. If I remember correctly, I knitted the center panel during two different summer vacations in Finland. Then it always just got abandoned in my knitting basket for month and months. But a couple of weeks ago, I just decided to finish it. I had this vision that it would be really beautiful and warm... which took quite an amount of imagination as is the case with many lace projects.

Tämä neule on täyttänyt vuosia jo useaan otteeseen ennen valmistumistaan. Tuota keskuskuviota tein parillakin kesälomalla Suomessa, mutta syksyn tullen mytty hylättiin neulekorin uumeniin kuukausiksi kerrallaan. Mutta pari viikkoa sitten yhtäkkiä päätin tekaista sen valmiiksi. Kuvittelin kuinka upea ja ihana ja lämmin siitä tulisi, oikea ruman ankanpoikasen tarina.

And then I lost my row counter and have to use a more archaic method. But I did not give up.

Ja jossain vaiheessa sohva söi kerroslaskimenkin ja piti siirtyä perinteiseen metodiin. Mutta en antanut periksi!



And then, finally, I got to block it and I knew I had been right! It came out very large,about 75cm x 220cm, but light and warm. Rustic luxe, as I was told in an Ravelry comment. Couldn't put it better myself.

Ja sitten lopulta sain huivin venytykseen ja tiesin että oikeassa olin. Siitä tuli todella iso, noin 75cm x 220cm, kuitenkin kevyt ja lämmin. Rustiikkia luksusta, kuten joku Ravelryssä kommentoi. Enpä osaisi itse paremmin kuvailla.



Now we are very pleased with ourselves.

Nyt olemme hyvin muikeina.

My New and Shiny Clapotis

pattern: Clapotis by Kate Gilbert in Fall 2004 Knitty
yarn:
Fearless Fibers Merino/Tencel Sock Yarn in Gunmetal, 2 skeins
needles: 3,5mm clover bamboo circular



comments: I must be one of the three knitters on the planet who hadn't made a Clapotis so far. What really triggered me to knit one now was the yarn. It had such a splendorous metallic sheen that I wanted a really simple and drapy pattern.
I worked the stitches through the back loop on the purled side too. Dropping the stithes was fun, but as I wanted to use up all of my wonderful yarn, the Clap is suuuuperlong and it was a huge bore tho knit in the end. But I'm so happy with the result that it really was worth it!

Kommentit: Taisin olla yksi niistä kolmesta neulojasta tällä planeetalla, joka ei vielä ollut tekaissut omaa Clapotista! Nyt kohdalle osui niin upeaa ja mahtavaa ja ihanaa ja metallinhohtoista lankaa, että se tuntui juuri sopivan mukavasti soljuvalta mallilta.
Neuloin oikealla puolella kierretyt silmukat kiertäen myös nurjalla puolella. Silmukoiden pudottelu oli hauskaa, mutta muuten neulominen oli aika tappavan tylsää. Tavoitteena oli käyttää lanka aika tarkkaan loppuun ja huivista tuli todella pitkä (ehkä noin 2.40m). Mutta hieno se on!

Chevvy Socks

pattern: Chevvy by Jody Pirrello from Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarn
yarn: Posh Yarn Laura (4 ply Sock), colourway Pier, used a total of 80g. of the skein
needles:2.75mm



verdict: The best fitting sock pattern ever! Look at the curve of the heel! And the pooling is minimum, so it works well for handpainted yarn. I'm very pleased. Get the book!

kommentit: Parhaiten jalkaan istuvat sukat mitä olen ikinä neulonut! Katsokaa tuota kantapään kaarta (siis sukassa). Ja lätäköityminen on aika minimaalista, eli malli toimii hyvin käsinvärjätyllä langalla. Olen tyytyväinen. Erittäin suositeltava tämä kirja!



Now I'm knitting denim. I started the SK8R sweater from the second Mason-Dixon book. I'm using three strands of Texere 2-ply denim I bought ages ago. My row gauge is all over the place. I'm knitting the 8-10 years size but it seems awfully small. So it might fit my 8 year old son or not. If not, it might be for my 6 year old daughter if I'm able to convince her that Matrix/Skater is a Cool Look. (Wish me luck)

Nyt neulon denimiä. Aloitin SK8R paidan Mason Dixonin uudemmasta kirjasta. Lanka on iät ja ajat sitten ostamaani Texeren 2-ply denimiä, joka kolminkertaisena (teoriassa) korvaa Rowan denimin. Kerrostiheys on jostain syystä ihan metsässä, eli jos tämä 8-10 vuotiaan koko ei mahdu 8-vuotiaalle pojalleni niin aion vakuuttaa 6-vuotiaan tyttäreni Matrix/skeittari-lookin ihanuudesta. Ugly as hell. But who cares.
Rumat kuin pirut. Mutta väliäkö sillä. Eiköhän niitä tule käytettyä kuitenkin!


These are my favourite so far. But I am scared when I think about weaving in those ends...
Nämä ovat luonnollisesti suosikit tästä porukasta. Onhan niissä ainakin kolmekymmentä pääteltävää lankaakin!
