I got my hands back!

I'm able to knit again!
The evil disease that affected my wrists and arms (and is still trying to) was just a viral infection I got from my son, caused by human parvovirus B19:

• It has become increasingly clear over the past several years that parvovirus B19 causes arthritis and arthralgias in adults and children. Although parvovirus infections in adults are most commonly asymptomatic, an estimated 60 percent of women with symptomatic disease manifest arthropathy. The most common presentation of parvovirus-related arthropathy in adults is the acute onset of arthralgias or frank arthritis involving the hands, knees, wrists and ankles. The symptoms usually subside within one to three weeks, although about 20 percent of affected women have persistent or recurring arthropathy for months and years.

Luckily I'm getting much better and have been knitting for two weeks already! (by the way, thank you for your get well- wishes, they really meant a lot). But I do notice that some projects are easier... knitting socks with thin bamboo needles is what feels best right now. To celebrate that I ordered Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarn, which I received today. It looks like an excellent book!

Olen taas neulontakykyinen! Mystinen jänne/niveltulehdus olikin pojalta tarttuneen parvoviruksen aiheuttama. Kyllä säikähdin aika lailla, että olisi jostain kroonisemmasta vaivasta kysymys... kiitos kaikille rohkaisevista viesteistä.

Jo pari viikkoa olen neulonut vaihtelevalla menestyksellä. Selvästi sukkien neulominen ohuilla bambupuikoilla tuntuu nyt parhaalta ratkaisulta. Sitä juhlistamaan tilasin Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarn -kirjan, joka tuli tänään. Vaikuttaa oikein lupaavalta!



In the meanwhile I have been using my sock yarn scraps to knit socks for my kids... the next project will certainly be something more exciting from the new book.

Viime aikoina olenkin lähinnä käyttänyt vanhoja sukkalankojen jämiä lasten sukkiin. Seuraavaksi jotain raflaavampaa uudesta kirjasta...

It's raining again. But the Spring will come. It always does!

I'm back from the twilight zone

There was never any follow-up to my "home alone" series as I got struck down by the mighty Influenza Virus. After the usual fever and muscle pain period I somehow managed to get some kind of reactive arthritis that made my hands hurt and I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO KNIT. I have only knitted a couple of rows in 2009, and only to test if my hands gets worse the next day. I'm getting better though and really hope to be able to get back to it again very soon as this is starting to affect my serenity.
Anyway, here are some FOs still from last year, as in B.I. = before influenza.

Yksin kotona-sarjaan ei ikinä tullut jatko-osaa, koska seuraavana päivänä minuun iski kammottava influenssavirus. Normaalien kuume- ja lihassärkypäivien jälkeen minulle tuli joku omituinen niveltulehdus, jonka takia käsiä särki niin paljon ETTÄ EN VOINUT NEULOA. Eli tänä vuonna on tullut mittariin vasta pari hassua rivia, nekin vain testausmielessä kokeillen että sattuuko käsiin seuraavana päivänä. Olen kuitenkin paranemaan päin ja toivon että pian pääsen takaisin normaaliin vauhtiin, koska tässä alkaa jo olla mielenrauha koetuksella.
Tässä kuitenkin muutama viime vuoden puolella valmistunut työ, jotka siis ovan Ajalta Ennen Tautia.

Cabled Cowl



pattern: Cabled Cowl by Olga Buraya-Kefelian from Blue Sky Alpacas
yarn: 6 x 50g BMG affinitas Bambino (100% merino wool)
needles: 4.5mm

Lovely pattern, but takes a little stamina though as there are many cable repeats. The cowl came out a bit short but I blocked it to the correct size. I had my first experience with polymer clay buttons!

Ihana tuli, mutta aikamoinen neulominen siinä oli. Mallineule alkoi loppuvaiheessa tulla jo korvista ulos. Venytin valmiin (huivin? kaulurin?) oikeisiin mittoihin valmiina, se näytti liian lyhyeltä muuten. Tein ensimmäistä kertaa itse FIMO-massasta napit!



Deluxe Baby Blanket



pattern: Cashmere Deluxe Blanket by Melanie Falick and Kristin Nicholas from Knitting for Baby
yarn: 5 x 50g Rosários 4 Happy Baby
(10% cashmere, 25% polyamid nylon, 54% merino)
needles: 3,5mm bamboo circs
measurements: about 80cm x 90cm

More neverending cables.... I made only 8 cable pattern repeats instead of 10. This was a hugely boring knit, but the blanket is very soft and nice and light. A gift for a friend who's expecting a baby boy, due to any moment now.

Lisää loputtomia palmikkoneuleita... tein vain kahdeksan mallineuletoistoa ohjeen kymmenen sijaan. Tämä oli uskomattoman tylsää neulottavaa, mutta peitosta tuli oikein pehmeä ja kevyt. Tämä oli lahja ystävälle, jolle syntyy poikavauva ihan minä hetkenä hyvänsä.

Cabled Hoodie



pattern: Pull à capuche #397-T3-180 from Phildar № 397 Créations Spécial Irlandais
yarn: Tricots Brancal Escocesa, 003, 100% wool, 625g
needles: 3,5mm and 4mm

I finally nailed this one! (Well actually I finished it two weeks ago but haven't had time to blog about it). This looks like it will never go out of fashion, so no problem even if it took about two years to finish! I changed the neck placket and did not make it start so low as in the pattern. I also doubled the ribbing in the hood and placket edging. And I used buttons istead of the cord fastening. Quite happy with this one!

Vihdoinkin niittasin tämän. Eihän siinä mennytkään kuin noin kaksi vuotta, mutta onneksi malli ei varmaan mene muodista ihan hetkessä. Ainoat muutokset tein kauluksessa. Se alkaa vähän ylempää kuin alkuperäisessä ohjeessa, ja tein reunaan joustoneuletta tuplamitan nappeja varten. En oikein pitänyt alkuperäisestä nauhakiinnitysratkaisusta. Valmiista paidasta tykkään kovasti!



Baby Beatriz Bear



pattern: Baby Bobbi Bear from Blue Sky Alpacas
yarn: Rosarios4 Capuccino (60% milk fibre, 40%australian wool), 2 x 50g.
needles:4,5mm circs and dpns

This is my most recent Xmas Gift FO. It is so cute! And it passed the very rigorous huggability test!

Golden Charade Socks



pattern: Charade by Sandra Park
yarn: Fleece Artist Somoko, don't know the exact colourway but it's golden yellow, 94g.
needles: 2,25 pony bamboo dpns

Second pair of Charade socks! It's such a great pattern... and this yarn. Oh man, the most luscious yarn ever.

Toinen Charade-sukkaparini! Malli on yksinkertaisen nerokas... ja tämä lanka oli aivan uskomattoman ylellistä.

Pink Conwy Socks



pattern: Conwy by Nancy Bush from Knitting On The Road
yarn: Cascade Heritage, Raspberry 5617, 75g.
needles: 2,25 dpns

My second or third pair of Conwys! Nancy Bush still rocks but I did get a bit bored after the first sock... I really liked this Cascade sock yarn (got it from here), it's really soft and nice and you really do not feel the nylon in it. The colour is a true solid colour which seems a bit flat after knitting with handpainted solids.

Taas vanha tuttu malli, eli Conwy toista tai kolmatta kertaa. Nancy Bush on nero, mutta täytyy myöntää, että tällä kertaa alkoi ensimmäisen sukan jälkeen tuntua vähän tervanjuonnilta... Cascaden sukkalanka on todella mukavan tuntuista (hankittu täältä), siinä ei nylonia huomaa juuri lainkaan. Langan väri on tuollainen teollisesti värjätty, se näyttää käsinvärjätyn langan jälkeen vähän lattealta. Mutta tottumiskysymyshän tuo vaan on.

Green Gloves



pattern: adapted from the glove pattern: Woolen Gloves by Veronik Avery from Knitting Classic Style
yarn: Wollmeise Reine Schurwolle 6-fach (discontinued), Frosch, 55g.
needles: 2,5mm dpns

This was an adaptation of Veronik Avery's glove pattern. I actually started the gloves following the pattern in the book, but the lace cuff looked really awful in this yarn (think half chewn lettuce) and I decided to do a simple picot edge and a shorter cuff. I quite like the colour and was happy to notice that there is almost no pooling. And it goes well with my new winter jacket!

Tämä on oma versioni Veronik Averyn sormikasohjeesta. Aloin ensin neulomaan ohjeen mukaista pitsiä, mutta jostain syystä se ei toiminut tällä langalla laisinkaan. (Se näytti lähinnä puoliksi pureskellulta salaatinlehdeltä). Niinpä tein simppelimmän nirkkoreunan. Väri on mielestäni aika hieno, eikä lätäköitä tullut juuri lainkaan. Ja sopii uuden talvitakin kanssa!
